Alcock began to lose gas after leaving Atlantic City and had to dump gasoline overboard. Wellman and five companions were rescued at sea by the Royal Mail liner Trent about 375 miles east of Norfolk. They were aboard the life boat after abandoning the America, which drifted and was left to founder in the Atlantic.
