Bandits trying to loot two alcohol cars on a Burlington train at Yates City engaged in a gun fight with Special Agent Dave Younggren. Younggren was shot twice in the leg and taken to a hospital in Galesburg. A second agent and the train crew were unaware of the shootout.

London reports 159000 men left England in 1923, up 46000 from 1922, with 108000 women emigrants. Net loss to Britain from emigration exceeding immigration stood at 208695.
William M Butler chair of the Republican National Committee testified before the Senate campaign fund committee that the national organization hopes to raise 1.3 million to add to a 3.9 million budget for a vigorous campaign between now and election day. He said funds are used by the bureau networks within the committee and that no other groups besides state organizations are raising money for the ticket. Butler disapproved of a Massachusetts manufacturer's offer to contribute above legal limits and "cover up" such gifts.
A statewide conference of Democratic campaign workers was called by E. J. Pealing, with Joseph T. Davis and John W. Davis involved. The Des Moines meeting next Wednesday will include party officials from all levels and representatives from Chicago headquarters.

The state supreme court holds the Quellmals Lumber and Manufacturing contract with the Iowa state prison was not approved by the board of control and the state is not liable for 21000 sought by the company for breach of contract. The suit arose from a contract entered by EB R Welke superintendent of the prison chair factory for several hundred thousand dollars of lumber. The board cancelled the contract as some lumber had been delivered and paid for.
