Fisher denies he fired the first shot

Dennis Fisher testified in a Dubuque murder trial that he shot Howard Miller after Miller fired two shotgun blasts at him. He described a confrontation at the Miller farm in which Miller threatened Myra Miller and later died from a rifle shot at about 25 feet.

Water service cut in two Washington blocks tonight

Water will be shut off at 10 p.m. in two small sections of Washington for main improvements. South Iowa Avenue from Main to Madison and West Madison Street from Second to B Avenue will experience low pressure overnight.

Marcus City and 2 Officers Sued for 200000

Richard Charles Nielsen of Marcus sues the City of Marcus and police officers Harold Sterman and Steve Geringer in Cherokee County District Court. He seeks 100000 in actual damages and 100000 in punitive damages for assault unlawful arrest unlawful detention and negligence. He alleges he was dragged from a car and beaten with fists and flashlights on July 25 1975 causing cuts and bruises.

Band members audition for all state groups

Eleven Washington High School band members will try out for the Iowa All State Band in auditions at Fairfield on Saturday Oct. 2. Those chosen will rehearse and perform in the festival concert in Des Moines and Ames on Nov. 21 and 22. Ninth graders Dave Hillman and Allen Van Houten also audition.

Two Die in Martelle Iowa Post Office Blaze

A fatal fire in Martelle Iowa destroyed a building housing a post office tavern and apartment. Two children died while two firefighters were injured and treated at St Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids. Firemen battled the blaze with smoke seen in Marion about 12 miles away. The fire began around 10 30 a m and victims' identities were not released.

Hospital in Washington to storage bulk oxygen for five years

Washington County Hospital will hire Kessler Distributing Co. to build a 25 000 cu ft bulk liquid oxygen storage tank on hospital grounds Northwest of the facility. The five year contract lowers the current oxygen cost from 2 12 to 1 52 per 100 cu ft in year one with penalties of 125 per month if canceled early.

Cost estimates rise for Iowa universities amid enrollment surge

Prisoner killed in New Jersey prison brawl

Inmates clashed in a Trenton State Prison classroom leaving one man dead and at least six others critically wounded. The dead man was Samuel Meyers, 38, stabbed, while hospitals treated several other inmates for stab wounds and lacerations. Prison officials called the scene tense but calm afterward.

Mount Mercy student hikes Pacific Northwest for learning experience
