Siamese twin tropical fish owned by Mrs. Jo Miskinis face navigational challenges as they are joined at the stomach and swim with conflicting directions. Mrs. Miskinis says the pair are “having the darkest time.”
Republican women of Washington County joined nationwide events for President Eisenhower's birthday. A Saturday food sale at Everettts Music Store supported the observance. Scrolls were sent to the President, and cakes, flags, and tokens were delivered to county hospitals and homes. Committee members included Mrs Dave Livingston and Mrs E D Morrison, with county Republican volunteers assisting. Republican headquarters opened at 326 North Marion Avenue.
Adlai Stevenson pledged during a nationwide address to go anywhere and confer at any level to halt H-bomb tests. He urged personal negotiations with the Soviet Union and atomic powers, backed by Anderson and Symington, to stop fallout while preserving national defense. He plans a four day campaign tour through Michigan Indiana and other states.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles declared the United States would aid any nation victimized by aggression in the Middle East. He cautioned about rising tensions, cited Israel's raids on Jordan, and expressed cautious optimism over progress toward a peaceful Suez solution while noting unresolved obstacles.
Clint Hensel was elected president of the Washington Golf and Country Club at the first meeting of the new board. E. D. Morrison Jr. will serve as vice president, and Richard Weeks was re elected secretary treasurer. New board members Max Henness, John Lee, and Curtis Wells joined after last week's stockholders dinner, succeeding T. R Phillips, Bill Sitler and Bill Shannon.
About 200 Young Republicans and friends gathered in Mt. Pleasant for a district meeting with Governor Leo Hoegh and his wife as honored guests. Hoegh urged Iowa to choose the Republican path of pride and progress while noting peace and a dedication to continued prosperity. Robert Waggoner spoke on GOP accomplishments from national to local levels, and organizers David Stanley and Jeanne Swisher led arrangements with attendees from Washington County.
A flash fire at the Vineyard Co. plant in Burlington Iowa destroyed the building and equipment with about 100000 dollars in damage. No workers were hurt though a firefighter was injured when a ladder collapsed during a two hour battle sparked by welding torch embers and aided by aluminum dust.
A Pan American Stratocruiser ditched in 3 to 4 foot swells about 1 045 miles southwest of San Francisco at 8 16 a m PST. All 31 aboard were rescued in good condition by the US Coast Guard Ponchartrain after two liferafts were launched and the plane broke in two. Captain Richard Ogg controlled the ditching and the weather cutter staged four boats to aid the rescue with two lifeboats in the water.
Washington city council signed a 6900 contract with Harland Bartholemew and Associates of St Louis to produce a comprehensive survey for the city plan commission. The study will cover population, land use, zoning, streets, parking, schools and parks and inform a long range improvement program with preliminary reports due as work progresses.
President Eisenhower told Minneapolis listeners that farmers are over the hump with a bright future and defended his flexible price supports. He criticized Adlai Stevenson and other Democrats for alleged attacks on farm policy and pledged continued effort to reduce surpluses and stabilize prices while noting world peace gains. He emphasized a five day West Coast campaign itinerary and spoke in Centennial Plaza and Rice Park before leaving for Seattle.
Four families have registered for an all day landscape workshop by Marguerita Tarr from Iowa State College. The session will be held Thursday November 1 at the county extension office and additional participants may still register by calling the extension office.
Washington Jaycees president Rodney Davisson announced a holiday tree sale to fund the chapter’s Christmas activities. The group will continue its annual program distributing Christmas packages to about 40 families and 175 children in Washington County outside the city. Trees go on sale around December 1 to support the project.
Mayor William H. Smart of Washington signs a proclamation declaring October 14 to 20 as Oil Progress Week. He highlights the oil industry’s contributions to the American economy and urges residents to value the freedoms it underpins, with local dealers observing the notice nationwide.
The Air Force will sharply reduce the search at midnight for the C-118 Liftmaster missing with 59 U.S. servicemen aboard. The operation shifts to surveillance of a 240 mile square where a dinghy and wheels were found, focusing now on wreckage rather than survivors.
Wayne Rich of Wayland drove north on North Iowa avenue at 6 p.m. when he turned his head and hit a delivery truck owned by Martins Cleaners that was parked. Police said both vehicles sustained extensive damage. Rich suffered a cut lip and a bruised chest.
The United Press reports the drought as the worst on record across Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Colorado. Pastures are barren, crops wither, and livestock face scarce feed with prices surging. Abandoned cropland rises. drought aid helps but not everywhere, as hay climbs to high prices and water shortages persist.
President Eisenhower announces a ban on delivering more than 200 jet fighters and heavy military equipment to Communist Yugoslavia. He says U S aid will focus on economic assistance and food grants for now, until Yugoslavia's relationship with Russia is clearer. Secretary Dulles may outline factors at a news conference. Russia has sought Tito's friendship in recent months.
State Auditor Chet Akers criticized the Lisbon and College Springs town councils for irregular financial transactions and poor recordkeeping in the period studied. The reports found expenditures beyond budgets, misclassified payments, shortened minutes, and unauthorized transactions, with no fraud proven.
Raymond Zuniga, an International Foreign Youth Exchange participant from Chile, stays a few weeks at Joe Jones farm in the Ainsworth area. He manages a 2000 acre Chilean farm with wheat corn beans oats and grapes. He also raises cattle goats sheep and swine.
Washington youth gain support as Community Chest drive opens October 22. Residents are urged to fund the United Way to fund outdoor recreation and services for young Scouts, promising enjoyment and growth through the community program.
