The Columbia won the first race of the international series in New York on October 16 at 3 54 setting a pace of 11 minutes ahead of Shamrock which finished 4 miles half behind at 4 05. Weather was fair and light breeze kept records from falling. Columbia crews praise their new sails amid earlier criticism.
Chicago dispatch reports Clay Evans United States pension commissioner visiting Chicago on his way to Washington after stops in Milwaukee St Paul and Corning Ia He urged amendments to pension laws for widows and noted 450000 claims pending down from 600000 while some 20000 Spanish American War claims are filed and pensioner totals dip by about 2000 last year He praised G A R relations and outlined a cross country tour ending in Washington including Salt Lake City San Francisco and Portland before resuming travel to Washington
Moses and Isaac Kahn, La Salle clothing merchants who opened a store Friday, were arrested Saturday with all their clerks, examined, bonded, discharged, and rearrested three times within three hours. They faced a charge of Violation of the city ordinance relative to transient tradesmen.
Boston and Massachusetts paid a rare tribute to Admiral Dewey on Saturday as he arrived from Vermont. Gen and Mrs Harrison win favorable notices in Perlin during a royal visit. At a court fete for Queen Wilhelmina, Harrison praised Emperor William’s conversation and knowledge, and the emperor lauded the US navy and American public leaders. The empress and queen spoke with the Harrison party in English.
Kalamazoo Michigan October 16 A two foot water snake was coughed up by Mrs Alfred Fisher after years of illness attributed to a snake in her stomach. The snake was killed and preserved in alcohol. She fainted from exhaustion but is now better. Chicago baseball scores report wins for Brooklyn Boston and others with games noted. James Bekels Chicago bank president was knocked down by an express wagon and hospitalized with bruises. A Bryan McKinley clash in Sioux City shows a prelude to speeches but no address given.
President McKinley toured Sioux City Iowa with thousands awaiting a glimpse after visiting Aberdeen and other South Dakota locales. The day featured cabinet speeches on expansion and the Philippines, a Methodist church stop, and a late-night train departure. College football results list Princeton over Columbia and Michigan over Western Reserve among others.
The jury in Indiana against Austin P. Boots editor of The Evening Tribune Greenfield failed to reach a verdict after forty hours deliberation on charges of presenting fraudulent claims against Hancock county.
Springfield Illinois Supreme Court admitted 247 to practice law on Saturday. Five women earned licenses: Margaret C. Wich of Quincy Marie Rowson of Princeton Ray N Anderson of Summer Hill Josephine Steven and May F Power both of Chicago.
A. M. Atkinson of Wabash Indiana, a leading layman and delegate in the Christian church Jubilee, spoke at a Grand hotel gathering in Cincinnati then died minutes later after declaring his heart fluttering. He had conducted major financial dealings with prominent capitalists and attended thirty conventions.
