Eisenhower to Meet Republicans on Little Rock Troops

President Eisenhower agreed to meet five Southern Republican congressmen to discuss withdrawing federal troops from Little Rock Arkansas. The White House said a date would be set and emphasized seeking a rapid solution to the integration impasse.

Marines Face Trial On Brutality Charge At Sasebo

In Tokyo the US Navy announced 16 Marine guards at Sasebo base will face courts martial for brutality. Two, Robert J. Barbuti and Adrian A. McLane, will be tried by general courts martial. The 14 others face special courts martial for alleged abuse reported by 25 prisoners from May 15 to June 12, 1957.

Three Injured In Crash North Of Olds Today

A three car wreck about one mile north of Olds on highway 218 at 10 this morning injured three people. Mrs. C. G. Shacklett, Dr. Glenn Widmer and a Kalona resident were involved. Widmer’s 1957 car was demolished and the Shacklett vehicle burned.

Washington High Marching Band Wins Moose Lodge Trophy

The Washington High School marching band earned the Moose Lodge Trophy for its parade work at the state Moose convention in Cedar Rapids. Presented by Lorene Cupp and Dale Sheetz, Drum Major Pat Sorrell accepted on behalf of the band which placed first in the convention parade during the homecoming football game Friday night.

Rites at Junction For Mrs. Johnstone

Mrs Lena Johnstone 65 of Seattle died Sunday October 13 while a former Columbus City resident. Body returns to Stacy Funeral Home for services Friday afternoon. Born in Calumet Michigan she was married to Earl Johnstone who died years ago. Survivors include daughters Vera Coon Columbus City Rae Marshall Seattle and four grandchildren.

Flu Epidemic Closes Several Iowa Schools Today

Iowa schools faced widespread closures as about four dozen closed due to Asian flu. Des Moines Waterloo Cedar Rapids and Davenport were hardest hit with hundreds of students absent. State reports over 1,600 flu cases last week and 500 confirmed as Asian flu.

Washington public schools report 25 percent of students absent amid a flu wave. Supt. Special Revival Services At Nazarene Church

The Rev Gilbert and Sylvia Anderson will open revival services at the Church of the Nazarene on East Jefferson Street Thursday evening Oct 17. Services continue nightly through Oct 27. The Andersons from Wichita Kansas are singers evangelists and present felt scene illustrations for young folks. Mrs Anderson recently returned from an overseas tour.

Miss Emnald Kunan an extension specialist from Iowa State College will conduct a leadership training school in home finishing in Washington on Wednesday Oct 16. The all day session will be at the county courthouse for interested Washington County women. A related work simplification course at Muscatine YWCA is set for Oct 17 and 18 with Naomi Shank and Mrs H G Stafford assisting. Transportation can be arranged through Marilyn Schweitzer.

Chalupas Open Tire Welding Service at East Third Street

Two brothers Ford and Bob Chalupa opened O K Rubber Welders at 1162 East Third Street in the former Glover Hatchery building. The shop offers auto truck and farm tire work including recapping repairing tires and sells new used and true and balance tires. Ford trained in Nevada Iowa and lived in Washington recently. Bob helped on the farm and with his father.

London based Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Co designs a flying bowler shaped space ship to survive re entry. Chief aerodynamist W F Hilton plans a wind tunnel test on a six inch model to prove a derby hat form can slice through heat barriers without burning up.

U P Home To Observe Tenth Year Thursday

The United Presbyterian Home in Washington marks its tenth anniversary on Thursday October 17 with a 1:30 p.m. anniversary service led by Dr George Kerr and an open house 10 a.m. to noon followed by a 12:30 p.m. picnic dinner. A new recreation room named the Alice Martin Thompson Lounge and an elevator dedication to Hoopeston U P Church are planned along with a brief memorial for eight Home members who have died since Sept 1956. The event includes a tour of the main building and 14 cottages inviting public visitors.

Menon urges compromise on arms reductions at UN
