On a Texas tour stop Eisenhower’s 18 car train had a coupling break near Dallas causing a jolt that sent party members forward and toppled a birthday cake. He apologized to about 9 thousand in Dallas while denouncing Democratic “rot and falsehoods” including pay cuts for soldiers and extended tours.
VEW Members plan Armistice day program with schools and Chamber of Commerce. They finalize young adult dances and prepare for the department pow wow in Muscatine with national commander and adjutant as dignitaries. Maurice Meyer resigns as chaplain. Harold Kerr named for remainder of year.
IOOF lodge holds regular meeting with past grand officers filling posts after papers naming offices were distributed. Participants included Oral Mayo noble grand R Wagenknecht vice grand Myron Salladay warden Gene Schneider conductor Charles Murdock and red Kephart with Vernon Witting Earl Nicola as right and left supporters to the noble grand Jessie Stout chaplain and Ralph Zeck Harold Brock as guardians. Communications read and plans for a family social on Thursday Oct 0 were reported featuring a masquerade with Cockayne's orchestra providing music.

The Skunk River bridge extends seven spans with one span cement forms ready. completion hoped for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Washington Y's Men's club plans a home based bridge marathon to replace past tournaments. Couples will play 20 hands per match across 13 two week periods starting the week of October 20. Entry fee 50 cents per evening. advance entries due by October 18. Dr. G. E. Montgomery chairs the event.

Spokane Washington Adlai E Stevenson said there is no trick to end the Korean conflict quickly and accused Eisenhower of politicking He pledged to run a clean honest government and challenged Eisenhower on public funds stewardship. He also criticized Eisenhowers Asians against Asians remark noting training of South Koreans.
Washington county’s farm to market road program advanced 267672.75 dollars toward the good roads goal in the last three fiscal years. This secured 116 added miles of surfacing and shows progress under the Iowa Road Use Fund Tax law enacted by the 53rd General Assembly.

The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed a district court ruling granting Florence J. Quinn a $1 200 widow’s allowance for the first year of estate administration and removing her son James L. Quinn as administrator. The decision holds that a final divorce is not required to deprive a widow of her allowance if no final divorce exists, and notes the former marriage spanned 1946 to 1951 with no will. John C. Owen represented Mrs. Quinn and L J Kehoe represented the children.
Secretary Pace announced the Army plans to fire an actual atomic shell from an 11 inch gun. He confirmed the weapon can fire shells with atomic warheads but gave no date or location for the first test.
Robert L. Burham of Washington has been chosen for Wesleyan’s $500 chemistry scholarship funded by a $1000 grant from Standard Oil of Indiana to 14 colleges. Burham, a May 1953 graduate candidate, served four years in World War II and one in Korea, and plans to pursue a master’s in chemistry at the University of Iowa before entering teaching. He is active in campus life as vice president of the student council and president of the Young Republicans.
Rev. I C Polk resigns as pastor of the Christian church in Washington after eight years to take a larger post at Central Christian church in Centerville. He cites a stronger challenge and notes his broad community work with the Washington Ministerial Association welfare board Boy Scouts Chest Kiwanis and council leadership. He plans to move with his family on December 1.

Two workers were killed and six others were missing after two explosions at a Du Pont nitromex plant in Barksdale Wisconsin. Coroner Alvin Bratley identified Ed Cumore as a victim. the other body was unnamed. Fire Chief and plant officials surveyed the wreckage as damage topped $75,000. plant manager B A Semb visited homes of six missing men with clergy.
Walter Messer plans a 20th anniversary celebration in Washington on Friday October 17 for his customers. The event at the Washington YMCA features The Promenaders square dance television stars and Kan Wagner cartoonist from WOC TYV.
Funeral services for Mrs Ed Wenger were held at Bethel Mennonite church north of Weyland this afternoon. Clergymen included Bishop Simon Gingerich Rev Willard R Leichty and Rev Vernon S Gertz. A Cappella music by the M Y F mixed octet. Pallbearers were nephews Milo Raymond Heiser Raymond Good J C and Emery Wenger. Burial followed in Bethel cemetery.
