Paving progress on Brighton Road and Skunk River bridge

Workmen from Bushman Construction Co on paving highway 1 between Washington and Brighton report rapid progress aided by favorable weather. Cement pouring connects sections from Skunk River to near Washington, enabling equipment moves for the final stretch to Brighton. The Skunk River bridge extends seven spans with one span cement forms ready. completion hoped for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Y's Men's Club to Sponsor Bridge Marathon

Washington Y's Men's club plans a home based bridge marathon to replace past tournaments. Couples will play 20 hands per match across 13 two week periods starting the week of October 20. Entry fee 50 cents per evening. advance entries due by October 18. Dr. G. E. Montgomery chairs the event.

Burham Wins Wesleyan Chemistry Scholarship at IWC

Robert L. Burham of Washington has been chosen for Wesleyan’s $500 chemistry scholarship funded by a $1000 grant from Standard Oil of Indiana to 14 colleges. Burham, a May 1953 graduate candidate, served four years in World War II and one in Korea, and plans to pursue a master’s in chemistry at the University of Iowa before entering teaching. He is active in campus life as vice president of the student council and president of the Young Republicans.

Funeral Services for Mrs Ed Wenger Held at Bethel Mennonite

Funeral services for Mrs Ed Wenger were held at Bethel Mennonite church north of Weyland this afternoon. Clergymen included Bishop Simon Gingerich Rev Willard R Leichty and Rev Vernon S Gertz.
