William Webster was found guilty by a jury of second degree murder for shooting George Talbot. The verdict follows indictments for first degree murder and comes as the district court clears its murder caseload. Other convictions include John Smeltzer and James Watkins, both with life sentences for similar killings.
The Iowa Tel company seeks to buy the Mutual telephone company despite minority stockholders injunctions. Judge McHenry heard arguments today as majority seeks approval of the transfer, with a heated hearing and strong opposing positions from the Mutual stockholders.
Memphis reports three killed and several missing as cyclone hits western Tennessee. Denmark in Madison County is largely demolished with fires and widespread destruction. Near Mulberry Lincoln county Tomas Helm and Homer Hiby with wife were injured. a Negro settlement along nearby area was wiped out.
Mrs A S Swade of St Louis dies after a racing car driven by Ralph Ireland crashes through a fence at sixty miles per hour during a centennial celebration in Charles City Missouri. Ireland is only slightly hurt as the car rends a forty foot fence and injures several spectators.
Mayor L. Bacon of Oskaloosa Iowa refuses to call a special election on the commission form of government. He says the petition does not conform with the law after several withdrawals. The issue will be taken to the district court for resolution.
Marengo Louisiana October 15 J Tanner Beem elected mayor succeeding A M Henderson removed under the Cosson law. Beem, oldest native Marengo resident, previously served as mayor years ago and joins the city during the semi centennial celebrations this week.
Washington gossip says Mrs. Taft’s social secretary Miss Alice Bleel will marry Richard Wainwright son of Rear Admiral Wainwright. The couple have been together since last winter when Bleel joined the White House staff. Bleel is noted for seven languages and piano skill.
Ardmore Okla Oct 15 Arguments in the Muskogee town let case on the motion to quash the indictments against Governor Haskell and five co defendants likely will be completed today Norman Haskell son of Governor Haskell argued for the defense then District Attorney Gregg will conclude. Judge Marshall may order testimony to prove allegations and the outcome will take days B T Hainer spoke for the government followed by A C Cruce for the defense who criticized the methods leading to the indictments.
Pittsburg Oct 15 delegates to the Disciples of Christ annual convention chose Topeka Kansas as the 1910 meeting city after a contest with Des Moines and Boston. The three big meetings drew over 10 000 delegates and many speeches urged home missions.
Deputy Examiner M. F. Kain reports Kremer, deposed Itasca county treasurer, faces a growing shortage now totaling $40,000. About $10,000 has been recovered as Kremer remains out on bail.
Detroit defeats Pittsburg 56 to 4 to level the series at three wins apiece in a dramatic matchup. Injuries mar a late Pittsburg rally as Tom Jones and Charles Schmidt are hurt, while Mulllin dominates until the ninth. Phillippe relieves and stifles Detroit’s offense.

Chicago National league team defeated the Chicago American league club 5 to 2 in the fourth game of the city championship series. Score by innings shows the Nationals leading 2 to 0 at the end of the first inning and holding the lead. Pitchers Walsh Payne and Overall Archer were mentioned in the box score.
Chicago market totals show October 15 1909 receipts estimated at 7000 to 10000 with bulk 740 to 780 light 700 to 770 mixed packers 730 to 790 and heavy shipments 724 79 rough 725 745 porters 750 760. Yesterday official receipts 12553 shipments 1 23 and left over 4659 with official receipts today 13000 and estimated tomorrow 7000 to 10000.
Estimated receipts show a steady market with mixed changes. Beeves range 4 09 to 875 for cows and heifers, Texas steers 210 to 570, stockers 519, Western cattle 310 to 625, and overall receipts around 1800. Native sheep 24 to 475, Western sheep 265 to 475, yearlings 440 to 540, lambs 425 to 7 10, Western lambs 425 to 7 15.
President Taft toured the Grand Canyon of the Colorado with a picnic lunch at Grand View a sunset view from Hopi Point and a 35 mile stage ride before heading to Albuquerque en route to El Paso Texas where he would meet President Diaz. He described his first view as awe inspiring reflecting on the canyon’s immense forces.
President Diaz arrives in Chihuahua to a grand welcome with bells, whistles, and cannon fire. An entertainment committee presents a large silver key to the city as crowds line Avenida Juarez. Spectators fill rooftops and streets as flowers are offered and schoolchildren sing the national anthem.
