Major assault at Con Thien challenges Marine frontier
North Vietnamese troops launched a four hour artillery and machinegun attack on the Con Thien outpost. Marines fought back with mortars, rifles, and air support as Dragonships blasted with miniguns. By dawn the attackers pulled back toward the west with Marine reinforcements and helicopter maneuvers surrounding the area. Casualties initially reported as 24 Marines killed and 35 wounded.

Iowan Killed as Car Hits Tree Near Brunsville Farm
A 21 year old northwest Iowa man, Marlin Plueger of rural Brunsville, died when his car left a gravel road near his parents farm and struck a tree. The crash occurred about three miles north and twelve miles west of Brunsville, near the Plueger family residence. It marked Iowa’s 607th traffic fatality this year, compared with 692 on the same date last year.
