UPI reports the United States launched a record 173 air missions against North Vietnam, saying bombing would resume in the demilitarized zone. Jets hit staging areas, infiltration routes, and shipping near Hiaphong, destroying or damaging dozens of targets. One F105 was shot down but the pilot was rescued.

Moving Day for local Bob Gillesby, General secretary of the Washington YMCA, will take place Saturday at 3 PM. Secretary McNamara returned from Saigon and told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base that enemy losses were heavy and there is no need for a major U.S. escalation. He indicated no significant change in deployment pace, noted Viet Cong casualties and supply-line shifts, and avoided detailing a larger reserve callup, while predicting U.S. forces could exceed 500,000 by late next year.

Will mail cards locally offer data on Zip Coding Washington postmaster Harry Levy today announced that in the next week October 17 to 22 one card will be delivered to each patron of the Washington post office. Cards will have spaces for out of town addresses to be zipped after residents print addresses.
A winter storm blasted Colorado and Wyoming with up to 17 inches of snow and record cold. Cheyenne was isolated and Denver International Airport closed briefly. Traffic halted in Wyoming and parts of Colorado, with at least four fatalities from storm accidents and crews freeing a stranded bus.
Murray proposes Iowa allocate 40 percent of local school budgets from state funds to ease teacher shortages. He envisions a 25 percent target by next session with an Educational Policy Commission to craft a statewide plan and boost teacher training. He backs expanding the junior college system and offering income tax credits or deductions for post high school education.
The US Weather Bureau issued a tornado watch for southern and southeastern Iowa, parts of northern Missouri, and portions of northwest and west central Illinois. One or two isolated tornadoes possible from noon to 6 PM with accompanying severe thunderstorms, large hail, and damaging winds. The greatest risk lies along a zone from southeast of Lamont, Iowa, to southeast of Moline, Illinois, including areas south of a line from southern Adair County to northern Clinton County.
