At Charles City the forty second annual convention of the fourth district Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs will feature a visit to Carrie Chapman Catt’s girlhood home four miles southeast of Charles City. Floyd County federated clubs will place a bronze plaque on the early residence of the suffrage pioneer now residing in New York.
Iowa City Jewish organizations telegrammed Secretary Hull urging action to keep England from abandoning the Balfour pledge to establish a Jewish national home in Palestine. They say breaking the pledge would violate a sacred trust for the Christian world and endanger persecuted Jews seeking refuge.
In New York on December 4, 1944, Guenther Gustav Rumrich pleaded guilty on opening day to stealing army defense secrets for a foreign power. The four defendants face charges of espionage. Rumrich previously served as a U S Army sergeant and deserted. Other defendants include Johanna Hofmann, Enrich Glaser, and Otto Herman Voss, with Glaser stationed at Fort Hamilton on Long Island.
In two Munich meetings Hitler ordered Czechoslovakia to cede additional border territory to Hungary amid border troops' standoff. Hungary to bolster security with further military measures after failed talks with Czech representatives. Dragoslava city reportedly excluded from cession.

Japanese troops pressed inland in South China aiming to cripple Canton port as a supply base. After crossing the Caikong river and taking Tamshui, combat cut communications between Hong Kong and Canton. Ten Japanese transports with four warships headed from Swatow to reinforce offensives.

A car driven by Gilbert Nelson of Burlington skidded on primary road No 1 about two miles north of town and struck a bridge railing. The vehicle was badly damaged but the driver escaped injury.
George W. Marshall aged 70 died at his Brighton home after a long illness. He was born in Polk County January 20 1868 and moved to the area as a child. Funeral services are set for Sunday at the Brighton Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Lily B Doran a son Stanley three granddaughters two half brothers a half sister and a niece.
Ts. William McDonald Jr of Victor faces district court in a $1 210 Hedrick Savings Bank robbery on Sept 4 with Judge Frank Bechly presiding. Mrs McDonald pleaded not guilty.
