Protecting Garden Roses From Winter Cold and Winds

Iowa State University extension horticulturist Ben F. Vance notes most garden roses lack winter hardiness and require protection from October through March. Use a 10 to 12 inch soil or peat mound around the base, prune canes to 20 to 24 inches, remove infected leaves, and avoid using soil from around the plant. For climbers, lay canes on the ground and cover with 4 to 5 inches of soil to protect already formed flower buds.
