A column notes the drowning of two year old Bobby Umbrell, son of Mr and Mrs Clay Umbrell, who was found in a jar of rain water on the Umbrell farm. The child had been playing alone in the farm yard and artificial respiration failed to revive him.
Des Moines Secretary of Agriculture Mark Thornburg cautioned southern Iowa housewives not to buy apples from an out-of-state trucker selling fruit sprayed with a dangerously high lead solution. Tests found the spray at 49 percent strength, far above federal and state limits set at 0.025 percent.
Iowa City district judge James P. Gaffney authorized a $500 reward from the George and Mary Novotny estate for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who killed the couple at their Shueyville farm home on September 9 or 10. The administrator Wesley Novotny posted the reward for at least two years.
Voter approval in McGregor to issue 120000 dollars in revenue bonds to build and operate a municipal light and power plant. Ballot passed 400 yes 275 no under the Simmer law. Plant not a general obligation. Interstate Power Co supplies current. 10 year franchise sought last fall and was reconsidered.
District Judge Henry N Graven schedules October 25 for a hearing to determine priority of four claims totaling 41817 against Radio Chapel Inc The $70000 independent evangelistic center built in 1977 by Burroughs A Waltrip has been in receivership since he left Mason City for the south last spring.
Ottumwa The Bulletin reports the C I O calls for Mayor A Hill and Safety Commissioner Harry E Swenson to resign over incompetency. If they refuse, citizens should remove them by due process of law.
ROCKWELL CITY The county grand jury urges removal proceedings against Supervisors W. B. Sutton and Charles W. Groves, to be started by County Attorney A. J. Braginton and the Iowa attorney general. No charges are named in the report. Braginton will proceed per jury recommendations to Judge J. V. P. Klinker.
Organ born in Washington ninety five years ago died last Sunday in Chicago. Burial followed at Woodlawn with Masonic rite led by T. L. Brookhart and prayers by Dr. F L Lastwood. Pallbearers were six members of Washington lodge of Masons chosen by Ray Cox. Callers included Mr and Mrs Glen Edwards and Mr and Mrs J A Kurtz.
Ottumwa police announce the arrest of Claire Swank 36 of Kirksville Missouri on murder charges in the deaths of Arthur Geisman 24 Ottumwa shoe store owner and Gilbert Carlson 41 Ottumwa man. Swank denied involvement but was linked to both killings by travel, possession of a 32 caliber revolver and ballistic evidence tying bullets to the same weapon.
The Washington county Post V F W lays out Armistice Day plans for November 11. Sunrise events in Central Park feature Bunny Blair raising the flag. A 10:55 AM eleven-bomb salute will be fired by Everett Burham with assistants Dale Atkinson, Tom Swift, Dave McGaffey, and A Palmer. Taps and echo taps play at 11 AM by Sons of Veterans buglers Pernock, Downing, Crossett, and Schilling.
Tucker Chevrolet on West Washington Street will host the first showing of the 1940 Chevrolet. C. W. Tucker invites Washington residents to the showroom for the nationwide display and to see the car noted for value, size, beauty, and economy. Showrooms will be open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with decorations for the announcement day.
Funeral services for Dr. Howard B. Hamilton of Omaha Nebraska will be at Sherman funeral home at 2 o clock Sunday conducted by Rev Achibald Stewart and Rev Wm M Nichol. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He died at his home after a heart attack. He was born Oct 15 1874 near Washington on the Hamilton farm. He graduated from Washington Academy Monmouth College 1897 and Chicago medical school and practiced in Ainsworth before moving to Omaha where he specialized in pediatrics and held the chair in pediatrics at the University of Nebraska for years. He was named Professor Emeritus for life last year. He is survived by his wife Olive McClanahan and daughter Janet and four sisters.
Funeral services are announced for Mrs A A Beanblossom who died early yesterday. The service will be Saturday at 2 30 PM at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr R C Keagy Methodist pastor. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. Mr and Mrs Frank H Wells of Colorado Springs are named as relatives or mourners.

In Helsinki Kallio invoked emergency national service. Finland studied Soviet proposals while preparing to resist threats to sovereignty. Germany began evacuating Germans from Helsinki as tensions mount. Cabinet expanded to include Swedish minority representation.
Firemen responded to three grass fires yesterday afternoon as hot dry conditions and strong winds continued. Blazes occurred west of town at the George Hayes estate farm and the Cherry place and a third in the southeast, all extinguished quickly with no damage reported.
West wall of the new Troop F armory rises to the top, with eight masons led by Jack Kupka laying blocks. Additional walls are going up fast and within one or two weeks most exterior and interior walls will be in place. A large furnace for the heating plant will arrive today and installation begins soon, promising a thoroughly adequate building.
Washington D C Oct 13 The Red Cross announced an increase in war relief expenditures to one million dollars.
In San Francisco on October 1 percent the CLO pressed Frances Perkins and the Labor Department to restore focus on labor issues. It accused the department of functioning as an empire report that few read and urged action to support workers.
Attorney L J Kehoe filed for a new trial in the state case against Howard Dawson who was convicted of obtaining money by false pretenses. Judge J G Patterson will decide before sentencing. The motion cites insufficient evidence and alleged errors in instructions. Separately, Judge Patterson ruled for the defendant and against the plaintiff in a drainage dispute over a diverted water course on a county farm, with costs awarded.
The Columbus Day program at the Knights of Columbus rooms was led by younger council members with Kenneth Blecha presiding in Mark Koenig's absence. Father H J Corcoran gave a patriotic address and J M Kelley offered a history of the knights. Music featured Forrest Walker Colleen Grady and young Dann sons with piano accompaniments, followed by dancing and cards.
