Feud Over State Legal Fees Divides Iowa Officials

Iowa State Treasurer Paul Franzenburg and State Auditor Lloyd Smith clashed in rival news conferences over legal fees charged to acquire land for the Capitol complex. Franzenburg, a gubernatorial candidate, cited higher West firm charges than Rosenberg in 1965. Smith defended his role, saying he only checked arithmetical accuracy and that the auditor’s office did not control legal work. West defended his billing, noting savings in court settlements and a $5,000 research save due to an appraisal error. Franzenburg demanded West’s dismissal unless a justification is provided.
