A Red Cross agent in Porto Rico reports widespread illness among locals. Dispatches from Chicago to New York detail shipping quotes and market closes as well as presidential travel plans and military movements across Omaha Walker and Boston in a roundup of 1900 era events.
Secretary Alger answers War Investigating Commission questions on the first campaign plan. He says early May landings near Mariel were planned but scrapped due to health risks and fleet movements. forces stayed near Cuba for rapid embarkation. The Santiago campaign followed Admiral Cervera's presence, with Shafter ordered to move to Santiago after Sampson’s June 6 bombardment. Troop transport from Tampa sailed June 14 with 16,988 personnel.
Tampa was chosen for base due to its shipping facilities and proximity to Cuba, enabling rapid troop movements if blockade or other conditions changed. Fernandina and Jacksonville camps prioritized troop health and rail and water mobility. Tampa had no permanent camp, just embarkation prep, with later moves to Huntsville. The Porto Rico campaign orders were issued June 26, 1898, and troops remained aboard ships after Tampa embarkation because Commodore Remey advised monitoring Spanish forces near Cuba.
In Pana Illinois on October 12 Mayor Warren Penwell discharged the entire city police, citing sympathy with striking miners. He replaced them with operators’ allies who posted bonds to back the new force. A clash with miner Jack Boyle led to arrests, later binding those men to appear on October 18. Several council members signaled plans to reverse the changes at the next meeting.
About 300 miners and 50 women from Montgomery and Cannerburg joined in Washington Indiana to drive nonunion workers from Cahel & Co. No. 4 mine. The attackers faced armed resistance, fled after warning shots, and one miner, John Kellar, was beaten by four women before being warned not to return to work.

President McKinley and the presidential party arrive in Omaha to a record crowd for the peace jubilee. King Ak-Sar-Ben IV and the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben join the welcome as the party reviews a grand parade of forty floats from city hall.
Across Illinois and Iowa on October 12 the president was greeted with constant ovations from crowds at DeKalb Cedar Rapids Belle Plaine Marshalltown Ames Tama Logan and council bluffs. He spoke briefly at several stops delivering patriotic remarks and a non political address.
