High school hosts parent teacher conferences for grades 7 through 12 on Monday October 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Parents are urged to meet teachers and review student progress as the first nine weeks ends October 27.
Representatives of the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Bank will be in Washington October 24 to recruit donors. Anyone willing to give a pint of blood should contact Charles Patrick at 653-4662. Donors are urgently needed to maintain hospital blood supply for Washington County Hospital and area patients. Patients can receive blood without payment while Washington remains an active donor community member.
Muscatine Iowa officials report 10 percent of 12th graders in Muscatine County quit before graduation, with 11th graders at 9.3 percent. The Muscatine School Board cited no explanation for the unusually high rate and pledged further study.
Des Moines Iowa lawmakers hear a legislative study committee warn that the state treasury could face a squeeze if elementary and secondary education costs for 1978 79 rise by about 70 million dollars. Budget analyst Jim Rose notes spending may climb 70 million as state revenues grow, with growth slowing from 10 percent to 7 5 percent. The panel seeks options to cut costs amid declining enrollments across Iowas 449 districts.
Harrisburg police arrested Sanford Newsome, 23, a school bus driver, after an argument with a 15-year-old student at the first stop. Newsome chased the teen outside the bus and fired a handgun shot that missed.
Police canvass Southgate after the stabbing deaths of Debbie Hogan ten Terry Hogan eight and Ann Brzeszkiewicz eight. Bodies found in a shallow stream near their homes with 40 and eight stab wounds. Investigators seek a neighbor or familiar local, no sexual assault noted.
The Washington school board will convene at 7 30 p m Wednesday in the School Administration Building for a regular meeting. Topics include policies on certificated personnel bids on trampolines summer weight lifting program staffing a half time study hall supervisor immunization law review and a coaches office telephone proposal. Retiring directors L W Robison and Dorothy McCarthy will be honored at a dinner before the session and a photo session will precede the meeting.
The Retail Merchants Bureau met at Winga's Restaurant to discuss the current promotion calendar. Comments were generally favorable. They proposed moving the Art Craft and Bake Sale to avoid Kalona Fall Festival and reviewed Christmas hours and holiday closings. The group noted Christmas decorations arriving and the Junior Chamber will manage Santa’s arrival and the Santa house.
Washington County Democrats announce a Friday October 21 dinner at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Des Moines featuring President Jimmy Carter on his first Iowa return since inauguration.
