A massive cyclone battered Orissa, India, leaving hundreds dead or missing and over 270,000 homeless as relief efforts mobilize. The storm followed a 70 mile inland path from Chandanbali, with floods and high winds delaying casualty reports and creating widespread havoc.
Two Iowans died from injuries sustained in traffic accidents, lifting Iowa's toll to 601 this year. Irvin Auderer of Dubuque, 43, died after being struck by a car driven by Carolyn Schuller, who faces a charge of failing to exercise caution to avoid a pedestrian. Another victim, 18, from Nashua, died in Rochester, Minnesota, from severe burns after a two truck collision involving a gas cylinder truck near New Hampton on September 22. Bill Schuster, a rider in the burning truck, had been in critical condition.
DETROIT UPI observers say a 35-day Ford UAW strike may be nearing end as negotiations resume with a 24-hour news blackout signaling possible progress. Ford shut plants across 25 states and the union wants a new contract, while GM and Chrysler remain running.
Police and firemen used tear gas and high pressure water as clashes erupted in Le Mans amid nationwide antigovernment protests after Charles de Gaulle’s government survived a censure motion. A U.S. Army 1st Air Cavalry regiment attacked south of Con Thien, suffering casualties while Marines reported continued shelling and reinforcements rushed to the area. Marines blamed by ground clashes as 26 Marines were wounded and seven killed in Tuesday’s fighting, with large artillery barrages and rocket fire continuing against the embattled outpost.
Bolivian army released diary extracts indicating Ernesto Guevara sought escape as his guerrilla campaign faltered. They described his disillusionment with peasants, noted Regis Debray among insurgents, and said diary passages would go to a military tribunal in Camari for Debray’s charges.

Bruce Johnson in his forties and Shari Quam, twenty two, intend to trek from American Samoa to a deserted coral island about 80 miles from Pago Pago. They will abandon food, medicine, weapons, and communication gear to prove man can survive in nature. They land with only camera gear and one bathing suit each, plan to fashion stone tools, drink coconut milk and rain water, catch fish and birds, then build a driftwood raft to return to Pago Pago. Johnson notes the ordeal begins with boredom and practical survival steps.
