William Smart Directs Chest Campaign Drive Plan

William Smart will head the 1965 Chest Campaign for 305 Washington area businesses with Milo Orris as co-chairman. The plan aims for a short three day drive, with workers assigned by district and ward, contacting only business owners. Kick-off is October 19 with a meeting October 16 at Winga's.

Hughes presses progress theme in Iowa campaign

Democratic Gov. Harold E. Hughes framed the Iowa race as a choice between continuing progress and closing the future. He accused rival Evan Hultman of proposing an expensive education plan that would raise taxes, underlining concerns about fiscal growth and realistic budgeting. In Dallas, Judge Frank C. Frytown man Murrie S Miller dies after illness

Murrie S Miller 66 of Frytown died Friday at 9 p m at home after several weeks illness. Funeral 10 a m Monday at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church with John Y Swartzendruber in charge. Explorer 22 laser tests begin after orbit from Vandenberg

Explorer 22 beacon satellite launched from Vandenberg AFB reaches 575 mile orbit at 8 01 p m PDT. NASA officials say first laser signal expected 24 30 hours after launch as mirrors aboard the 116 pound satellite bounce light for tracking and communications experiments and ionosphere study with scientists from 32 nations joining the international project.

Four Auto Crashes Reported In Washington Area

Iowa Highway Patrol and City Police logged four Saturday morning crashes in Washington area from 12:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Gard ner and Rin ner collided at Highway 92 and 1. Helfrich and McBee crash at East Washington and South Second. Moore, from Cedar Falls, rolled a car near Crooked Creek bridge with companion Anderson from Dows. Palmer and Welchman collision on Highway 92 near Wittetoe farm. No injuries in first, third, or last. damages listed, fines for control, red light, and assured distance violations.

Fire at Gladwin farm threatens home and outbuildings

Columbus Junction firemen were called to the Robert Green farm in the Gladwin area Friday afternoon to extinguish a woodpile fire caused by sparks from a tractor exhaust. Wind magnified danger to the home and other farm structures on the Green farm.

Johnson heads west after civil rights talk on tour

President Johnson leaves New Orleans for the LBJ Ranch after a three day Midwest and South campaign swing. A planned route includes Phoenix Long Beach San Francisco Las Vegas Reno Butte Casper Denver Boise and a return to Washington. Johnson stressed unity and enforcement of civil rights laws amid a political bid against Goldwater.
