Duane McLain, a 19 year old and Rushville High School graduate, confessed to beating 13 year old Karen Talbot with a hammer and shooting her to death on a lonely ranch after she refused a kiss. He led officers to the shallow grave where her body was found after being arrested near O Neill Nebraska.

State president Kenneth Smith of Des Moines will conduct the annual officer election. Gideons from Wellman and Washington were guests at a fellowship dinner Friday.
AP recounts Carl Austin Hall plotting to flee U S with a 600000 ransom for six year old Bobby Greenlease. A mysterious letter to a St Joseph attorney was opened by cab driver John Hager and Sandra O Day. Hall hinted he might escape by ship or plane, thwarted by investigators. Federal authorities meanwhile continue inquiries.

A fire at the Des Moines Music House in downtown Des Moines caused about 49 000 dollars in damage. The blaze started in a rear rubbish pile and damaged wooden instruments phonograph records and sheet music. Firemen controlled the fire in 15 minutes but smoke persisted over an hour. Two firefighters were overcome by smoke and treated with oxygen.
David LeRoy Repp, 17, of Albia, died when his westbound car failed a curve on Highway 92 near Rex Smith Corner. Four teenage passengers, all from Albia, were injured but survived. they were treated and released from Washington County Hospital. The car was demolished and Sheriff’s deputies investigated. Repp is the ninth Washington County traffic fatality of the year.
Bio chemistry students at the University of Iowa burned out of their laboratories by a three million dollar fire will resume classes in alternate quarters Monday. The Pharmacy College and chemistry and botany departments will open rooms for the biochemists though crowding may occur. Over 100 students will use a pharmacy lab built for 60 temporarily. The fire on the top floor of the chemistry building caused by a flash explosion spread rapidly due to obsolete ventilation.
Mrs Arthur E. Summerfield wife of the postmaster general settled an income tax claim near $100000. L Rhoe Walter said Summerfield and his wife have no further comment. The claim likely settled at a regional IRS office. Origin traced to 1947 when the Summerfield Chevrolet Co Flint Michigan bought her stock for 400000 amid tax disputes over capital gains versus income tax.
