Iowa state liquor stores post 71.2 million in sales

Des Moines reports Iowa's 199 state liquor stores sold 71.2 million dollars of liquor in the last fiscal year. Audit notes profit around 25 million in 1970 with about 20 million in net profit after expenses. Nearly half of rebates went to cities counties and towns as liquor tax rebates. Sales rise about five million since 1969.

Tapscott launches bid for Iowa governor in 1972 race

Des Moines State Senator John Tapscott announced his candidacy for the 1972 Democratic gubernatorial nomination. He vows a quality of life campaign focusing on the poor, farmers, elderly, minorities, and youth, aiming to root out special interests and reduce government waste. He spoke at a Des Moines water trough after 7,500 miles of pre announcement travel. City to Repaint Parking Lines on Washington Streets

City workmen begin repainting parking lines on Washington business streets. Closures include the square’s north and south sides Monday, one block on North Marion and North Iowa Tuesday, and east and west sides Wednesday, with further closures on East Main East Washington and South Marion after slurry seal application.
