Hurricane Hazel Headed Toward Jamaica With 125 mph Winds

A Caribbean hurricane of 125 mph churned westward as Navy hurricane hunter planes avoided the storm center. The center lay about 360 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, with gale winds extending 200 miles north and 100 miles south. One Navy crew member, Burbank Mitchell of Syracuse, was injured when his plane bucked through the hurricane wall.

Hartzell ruled ineligible for Wesleyan game

Iowa Wesleyan quarterback Dick Hartzell was ruled ineligible by Iowa Conference Commissioner Gray Eby on Friday. Hartzell had dropped out in the second semester last year and had been deemed eligible after a prior ruling, prompting protests from Central and Dubuque. The Washington, Iowa, player had led Wesleyan to wins over Central and Simpson this season.

Two Men Die in Storm Lake Crash on Iowa 71

Two men died in a late Friday crash on Iowa 71 near Storm Lake. George Mittelstadt, 38, of Storm Lake, was the driver of one car, and the collision was nearly head on with another vehicle.

States to Fund Most of New School Construction

Federal Education Commissioner Samuel M. Brownell told a House subcommittee that states must pay a large share of the cost for 370 000 classrooms estimated at 10 to 15 billion dollars. Car collision near Brush leaves two dead

John M. Rudolph, 22, of Brush Colorado, and a passenger were killed when their car collided with a vehicle driven by Donald L. Braesch of Omaha. Braesch and his passenger Jack R. Burge of Omaha escaped serious injuries according to Sheriff Harry Dreyer.

Capehart seeks extension of FHA probe into next year

Sen. Homer E. Capehart announced he will ask the Senate Banking Committee to extend its investigation of the Federal Housing Administration scandal for another year to serve as a watchdog of the housing program. He said the panel could continue hearings but would seek only funds to maintain staff for the additional year. Burlington Couple Die in Kansas Crash

A Burlington Iowa couple, J Wallace Howard 62 and his wife Linda, were killed after their car collided with a truck on Highway 24 nine miles east of Lawrence Kansas. The truck driver Herbert E Rafferty 37 of Iola sustained only minor injuries.

Three Polio Deaths Reported in State

Three polio deaths were reported in Iowa on Friday. Charles Felter six of Woodward died at Blank Memorial hospital Des Moines after admission Sept 28. Ronald Vecchi twelve of Des Moines died of bulbar polio at the same hospital after admission Sept 30. Harold Baustian thirty seven of Davenport died of bulbar polio at University Hospitals Iowa City after admission Sept 27. It was the 13th polio death at University Hospitals this year.

Friend of Baby Sitter Arrested for Double Slaying

An 18 year old high school student Kenneth Chapin will be charged with first degree murder for the Sept 25 deaths of Lynn Ann Smith 14 and Steven Goldberg 4 in Springfield Massachusetts. Chapin admitted stabbing Lynn Ann 38 times and Steven 24 times with a bayonet and breaking their necks.
