The Washington post office along with others nationwide will be closed Monday October 11 in observance of Columbus Day. No city or rural delivery. Special delivery service will be provided. Box patrons can use the call window 8 to 9 a.m. Lobby hours 6 a.m. to 5 45 p.m. Mail dispatches at 4 15 and 5 45 p.m.
The West Union United Methodist Church in Iowa burned late Thursday with damage expected to reach at least 500000. Fire destroyed the brick worship and educational centers as the main structure caved in. the parsonage nearby was saved. Fire crews arrived around 4 p.m. as witnesses reported smoke.
Rep. Bill Cohen of Maine will campaign with Jim Leach in Iowa City on Saturday. The pair plan to greet Hawkeye fans outside Kinnick Stadium during the Ohio State football game at the University of Iowa. Cohen, elected to Congress in 1972, served on the Judiciary Committee during the 1974 Watergate hearings and was later named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men by the U.S. Jaycees in 1975.
Independent accountants found the Postal Service ended its 1976 fiscal year with a deficit of 1.176 billion dollars, $200 million better than forecast. Postmaster General Bailor credited tight costs, a rate increase, and efficiency gains plus higher mail volume between January and June.
Washington reports the wage base for Social Security tax will climb from 15300 to 16500, making workers earning 16500 or more pay 965.25 in taxes. The maximum eligible earnings for full Social Security benefits also rises to 3000 from 2760, with excess earnings reducing benefits. The change boosts payroll taxes by about 2.3 billion dollars.
Unemployment fell to 7.8 percent nationally in September, the first drop in four months, with 7.4 million people employed and 7.8 million unemployed. In Iowa, September joblessness slipped to 4.9 percent from 5.1, aided by students returning to school, manufacturing holding steady, and fewer layoffs. Nationwide, the rate edged down from 7.9 to 7.8 percent while total employment declined slightly by 160,000.
A United Presbyterian led UNICEF drive is set for Sunday October 24 from 5 30 to 7 p m in Washington with a backup date of October 31 in case of rain. Mrs Margaret Wolf chairs the committee assisted by church and community members. Fourth to ninth graders will gather at Methodist and Christian churches for instructions and refreshments will be served.
Mostly clear and not as cold tonight with lows in the mid 30s to low 40s. Saturday brings sun and rising temperatures with highs from the low 60s in the northeast to the low 70s in the west.
Washington County residents praised The Hiding Place after a special preview. The film screens at the State Theater November 4 to 6 with two nightly showings and a Saturday matinee. Tickets are selling at local shops until October 30, then at the door. Cast includes Julie Harris and Eileen Heckart. Rev. Berkey and Mrs. Graber praised its message of faith amid persecution.
United Press International reports a campaign dispute over Eastern Europe and Soviet influence. Carter accuses Ford of blundering by claiming East Europeans were free of domination, while Ford defends U.S. support for independence and vows peaceful steps toward reducing Soviet ties.
Iowa totaled 2.96 billion in federal outlays last year, with 68 percent for public assistance. The state ranked 33rd in outlays by state while spending per resident reached 1047.35 dollars. DoSS led allocations, followed by Employment Security and Transportation amid calls for review of federal funds and debate over tax-dollar returns.
