In Leopoldville Congo police mutinied over unpaid wages arresting about two dozen commissioners. Armed officers raided homes and offices, detaining leaders at a police camp. Civilians were largely untouched as Lumumba seeks to form a new cabinet amid political turmoil.
Vice President Richard M Nixon aimed a sweeping eight day campaign through 11 states after a strong showing in the second Kennedy debate. He planned stops in La Crosse Rochester Milwaukee Billings and a heavy Los Angeles area stretch ahead of the third TV debate.
Senator John F Kennedy spoke in Bowling Green Kentucky calling tobacco the bright spot in farming and urging unity with tobacco growers. He credited Democrats for prior support and criticized Nixon for not backing the program while Benson tried to scuttle it.
Five year old Jymme Hollesen's curiosity led to her pet fox tenner pup py being dried in a gas fired clothes dryer. Her mother, Mrs. Harry Hollesen, freed the six month old puppy Trixie from the spinning drum and vowed the machine would remain disconnected except during use.
NASA and the US Information Agency report the Echo II satellite will be visible again over North America and Europe after weeks in Earth’s shadow. The wrinkled aluminum reflector remains bright and is expected to disintegrate in about a year, continuing its nightly sky show.
Two young California men were bound over to the grand jury on illegal narcotics possession in Cedar Falls. Pat William Starbeck, 23, of South Laguna faced $3,000 bond in Black Hawk County jail, while Max Clark Callahan, 23, of Balboa had already posted $3,000 bond.
In Ashland Alabama a 14 year old boy Raymond Eugene Brown admitted killing his aunt grandmother and great grandmother with a butcher knife claiming he did it for money. Police and sheriff describe the act as the worst in state history and the town reels from shock.
UPI reporting from Phoenix says Senator Barry Goldwater indicates he would be available as a 1964 Republican candidate if Vice President Nixon loses to Senator Kennedy. He adds he is happy to stay in Arizona unless the supposition becomes reality and notes Nixon lacked full strength in Friday's TV debate with Kennedy.
United States argues against seating Peiping as China at the United Nations. Lt. Col. James J. Wadsworth cites a Communist party statement praising atomic war. Khrushchev delays arrival for possible disarmament talks and a Big Four summit is discussed after U.S. elections.
In Washington, Nixon and Kennedy claimed victory after a second televised debate. Nixon showed a stronger, more aggressive performance, while both candidates sparred on Quemoy and Matsu, Cuba, the U2 incident, and civil rights, with no concession on who led.
New York report cites the Bureau of Advertising as saying 115 billion hot dogs will be eaten this year and charcoal sales may reach 250000 tons as outdoor cooking and eating surge in popularity.
The Pentagon and Sperry Utah announce Sergeant a new 30 foot medium range ballistic guided missile to replace Corporal It will be produced in Salt Lake City and enter service late 1961 or early 1962 The weapon is designed for mobility accuracy and extended range and can be air or road transported The test firing history includes a 75 mile range with ongoing work to extend it further
Sherrill Kaye Miller 17 of Kalona died in a Hesston hospital at 5 p m after one day’s admission. Born October 24 1942 she was daughter of Wilbur J and Opal Kremer Miller. Survived by parents a sister Joyce grandparents Mr and Mrs William Kremer of Milford Nebraska. Funeral 10 am Tuesday Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church with John Y Swartzendruber and Herman J Smucker.
Mayor Malcolm Ellis refused state aid and deputized firemen to guard GE’s largest strike plant. GE seeks court injunctions at other sites amid weeklong nationwide action. Ellis declares emergency and prepares for Monday work return.
United Press International reports fair skies in the west and partly cloudy conditions in the east tonight. Sunday remains partly cloudy with a slight warming, lows near 45 east and around 70s west. Outlooks for Monday show cooler northwest winds and a chance of few showers in the north.
