Des Moines Iowa Gov Herschel Loveless said he will not call a special session of the Legislature unless more legislators show interest. He reported about 33 survey replies with roughly a 50 50 split on a session and outlined proposals to resolve the finance deadlock after vetoing the tax bill and capital projects.
Community reception honors Mrs. Stan Kiesey new executive director of the Washington YWCA at the Robert Day guest house from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday October 10. She is a Washington native with wartime service on the OPA Board and as Women’s County Chairman of the War Bond Drive. She previously led YWCA programs and training and now heads the local YWCA. Mr. and Mrs. Kiesey have two sons and a daughter. The invitation extends to YMCA members and community friends.
Fire gutted the three story Ottumwa Heights Academy main building in Ottumwa Iowa. Fire equipment from the city and surrounding areas responded as crews fought the blaze. Officials said it was a bad fire and were unsure if anyone was trapped.
A luncheon to kickoff the Iowa Children’s Home Society drive in Washington County is set for Wednesday October 9 at 12 30 PM at Mrs Emma Barnett’s home. Guest speaker will be Robert Bull director of public relations society. The campaign runs October 9 through October 30.
E Ray Bell announces higher 1957 loan rates in Washington county with 1957 compliance corn set at 1.38 per bushel, non compliance at 1.08, barley 97 cents, oats 61 cents, rye 1.19 and sorghum 1.78. Parity shift on Oct 1 raises national average to 1.40 per bushel for compliance corn.
Cold air moves into Iowa behind a band of showers and thundershowers. Forecasters expect statewide temperature declines with a shift from rain to drizzle tonight and across the state by Wednesday noon. Overnight lows range from 38 in the northwest to 53 in the southeast, with daytime highs from the low 50s northwest to upper 60s southeast.
Nine year old Cecil Byron Litwiller of Washington County, Iowa, died from internal injuries after a farm accident Monday afternoon when a load of corn passed over him while unloading. He was treated at Washington County Hospital and died at 6:10 pm. Funeral services were set for 2:30 pm Wednesday at East Union Mennonite Church near Kalona. Yoder Funeral Home handled arrangements. He was born Sept 1, 1948 in Geneseo Illinois and attended Prairie Flower School. Survivors include his parents Chancey and Elsie Egli Litwiller, two brothers, a grandmother and grandfather.
Catherine Craighead, 16, contradicted Gov Faubus alleging paratroopers invaded Central High girls dressing rooms. She said soldiers escort Negro students to a stair entrance near the dressing room and never intrude, noting no disruption as about 100 whites gathered but remained calm.
Howard E. Lodwig, 19, of Davenport, admitted stealing seven cars since July and said he dumped two in the Mississippi River to wash fingerprints. He was bound over to the Scott County grand jury and held on a $7,500 bond after being seen driving Lodwig’s car by John Hansen of Moline.
Soviet party chief Nikita Khrushchev declared the intercontinental ballistic missile is only one of many assets, calling it a terrible weapon and signaling more tools behind the Soviet arsenal. He spoke to two British MPs in Moscow and warned the U S and Turkey amid Middle East tensions as border incidents between Turkish and Syrian patrols emerged.
Kalona and Center Junction men win state corn picking titles at a contest amid a Washington Rotary welcoming party for local public school teachers. The event at the YMCA drew about 175 attendees including teachers,Rotary members and education officials. The program featured introductions by school principals and remarks from Dr. A B Grimes and Vladimir S Lavrov on world peace and cooperation.
John Stutzman of Kalona won the two row division with a Ford mounted picker and a score of 0.59 while Marvin Blohm of Center Junction took top honors in the one row division with a 91.15 using a Ford mounted picker. Erwin Wulf of Ainsworth earned second in the two row division with 90.44 on an Oliver pull type picker. Leonard Schooley of Batavia was second in the one row with 88.8 on a Ford mounted picker. About 13 000 people attended the opening at Washington municipal airport as officials prepared final results after judging.
City council approved a long range plan for orderly development prepared with Harland Bartholomew Associates. The plan emphasizes phased improvements and requires council consent for major steps. A new zoning ordinance linked to the plan expands business and industry while protecting homes.
Rus sell Lee Kneedler 34 Panorama Park was bound to the Scott County grand jury on arson charges after waiving preliminary hearing. He faces $10,000 bond and is tied to a fire at his home last week amid investigations into about 22 rural fires. Lie detector tests cleared five suspects except Kneedler.
Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson said Russia has not yet fielded an intercontinental ballistic missile and is not ahead of the United States in overall strength.
