Life Prison Term For Leo Bodenberger
Leo Bodenberger was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of first degree murder in the shotgun slaying of his brother John, 62. The judge ruled the degree of guilt at the end of a two day hearing. Leo admitted shooting John August 30 during a dispute over an estate. Witnesses testified Leo had mild manners while John was abusive. Leo led authorities to the body in weeds along the Raccoon River.

Cornell College Group Suspended For Year
The Owls social group at Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa was suspended for the rest of the school year by academic dean Karl D Harrell after a series of thefts in the area. Deputy Sheriff Larry Condon found five stolen chickens one bushel each of apples and cantaloupes and two cases of soda in an Owls cabin south of town. The college discipline committee acted independently of law enforcement and the ban includes all social functions and an indefinite suspension of cabin use.

Escapee Watts Back In Anamosa After Dubuque Trip
Darrell L. Watts, 24, of Boone, fled the Anamosa Men's Reformatory with a gunpoint drive to Dubuque, held three people as hostages, and was recaptured eight hours later in East Dubuque. He faced a 10 year auto theft sentence and had been a trusted inmate since Wednesday. The abducted driver Mrs. Earl Byerly, 60, escaped harm. Watts warned of shooting if radio reports emerged.

George W. Mason, 63, president of American Motors Corp., died today at Harper Hospital after a brief illness. Mason led the merger of Hudson, Nash-Kelvinator into American Motors and served as the company’s first president. He started in the auto industry with the Dodge brothers in 1913 and was president of the Automobile Manufacturers Assn. Survived by his widow Florence, two sons, two stepsons, and a sister.
