Taft and Bryan arrived in Chicago with speeches and prophesies amid the heated campaign. Taft spoke at the waterways convention then headed to Galesburg for the Lincoln-Douglas anniversary, while Bryan attended the Chicago Association of Commerce banquet and planned further engagements.
Bryan's day included a major gathering of the Bryan and Kern National Business Men's association at the Auditorium hotel with Ed ward S. Goltra chairing in place of Nathan Straus. Delegates from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and other states planned for the Democratic ticket's success in the 1908 campaign.
The banquet brought Taft and Bryan together for speeches cheered by 1433 attendees across three halls. Taft and Bryan sat five feet apart as leaders greeted the crowd, then prepared to travel separate paths with Bryan retiring to his room for rest and Taft heading to Cincinnati to register to vote.
Crete on the island of Crete proclaimed union with Greece after a sweeping popular demonstration. More than 100000 gathered as revolution leaders and officials urged acceptance and ordered officials to govern in the name of the Hellenic state. French troops briefly clashed over flags before calm was restored. A government decree issued at 5 pm announced the union and directed officials to operate under Greece.
Miss Katherine Keating, sixteen, daughter of John J. Keating of 5537 Bishop St, seeks 50000 dollars from Morris & Co. for the loss of two fingers. The suit, arising after a strike, alleges she was moved from chipped beef to printing and injured feeding a press without proper instruction. The trial began in Judge Cleland's court.
Holland Mich Oct 8 officers of the Holland Fair association censored a side show named The Superba that billed itself as Moral and Polite. The director ordered the manager to remove objectionable material and the act was effectively driven from the grounds during fair week.
Lexington October report says indictments of Elbert Hargis Edward Callahan Alexander Hargis and Jes Spicer for the James Cockrell assassination in Breathitt county were dismissed in circuit court on motion of the commonwealth. State's Attorney Allen said the trials failed to yield convictions and he doubted future success.
In Henderson county Tex Cain Cox near Athens diversified into fruit vegetables cereals hay and cotton and in almonds as a side project planted many young trees five years ago. The trees are now bearing almonds though smaller than imported varieties. Last year they bore a few, this year many more and by next year a marketable crop is expected.

Word comes that Ralph W. Eddy, the young traveling man who vanished in Milwaukee on August 20, two days before his planned marriage to Miss Warren of Wooster, has enlisted in the United States Army at Jefferson Barracks St. Louis on August 21 and is stationed at Leavenworth.
Toronto Ont Oct 8 reports that the Union stockyards at West Toronto will be acquired within days by a large Chicago packing firm. It is not yet decided whether Armour or Swift will take ownership.
