Marines seize hill fortress near DMZ in major push

U S forces reported two major victories as Marines captured a stubborn hill fortress just south of the DMZ while 1st Cavalry Division units killed or captured 164 more Communist fighters along the central coast. Operation Irving has logged heavy Viet Cong losses and mass surrenders amid Allied sweeps.

British F help at UN urged on Viet Nam peace plan

British Foreign Secretary George Brown urged the United Nations General Assembly to convene a Viet Nam peace conference next week including the National Liberation Front. He called for a North Viet Nam bombing halt and curbs on U.S. troop increases, and urged reviving the 1954 Geneva talks with Soviet support. The Labor Party gathering endorsed government policy on Nam, foreign policy, and defense by a large margin.

Coffee rally boosts Washington Community Chest drive

Joe Evanovich announced a second Coffee Rally for residential workers Friday at 9 15 a m with coffee and homemade rolls. A free baby sitting service is offered at the Methodist church while mothers attend. Workers who served in the business are invited to visit Captain's Table Friday 8 a m to noon for coffee and rolls and to submit any remaining charity cards.

City workmen back on the job today

City workers resumed duties this morning after settling a dispute over pay rates at a council meeting held Wednesday afternoon. The agreement restores normal services and ends the labor pause.

Abandoned Stolen Car Chase Ends in Fields West of Washington

Police and highway patrols hunted two young men after a high speed chase from a Washington city car parked near highways 92 and 1. The stolen 1957 Pontiac, linked to Linda Kay Wellington of Columbus Junction, was abandoned in a ditch near Combs farm. Clothing, gas cans, hose, groceries and items were recovered, and officers urge residents to report any sightings to aid capture.

Johnson to visit Pacific nations on Asian trip

President Johnson plans a broad Asia tour late this month with stops in New Zealand Australia Malaysia Thailand and South Korea ahead of a Manila conference on the Vietnam war. The itinerary includes a possible visit to a major U.S. military base in South Vietnam and a stop in the Philippines for the seven nation conference.

Pause in Bombing to Allow Viet Nam DMZ Inspections

UPI reports a pause in U S bombing of the Vietnam DMZ to permit International Control Commission patrols. North Viet Nam refused to allow cross border access for ICC personnel, despite Washington's halt of air activity in the eastern DMZ. The commission, with members from India Canada and Poland, has not yet crossed into the northern zone.

Quiet at Harlan plant as county Atty blasts state aid

In Harlan Iowa violence after a strike at Western Iowa Park Co escalated over the weekend but today the plant was quiet. 65 Local 1225 UPWA members face unlawful assembly charges while the county attorney questions the role of the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
