In Cincinnati Ohio Old Dobbin scored a knockout after a collision with a truck driven by Anthony Rinaldi. The horse limped to its stable while the truck sustained a fractured fan and a smashed radiator and was towed away.
Washington county swine growers met at Townsley park livestock building to hear experts outline meat type hog production. Russell Plager and FE. L. Janice Boysen five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Boysen Denison died in a hospital Monday night from injuries suffered in a traffic accident. This was the first traffic fatality in Dennison since 1947.
Claire Keating's welding shop has erected fire escapes on three Washington hotels including Hotel Washington. The Travelers and Grand hotels also received escapes this year. Keating and assistants Floyd Gonterman Elmer Logan and Charles Swift designed fabricated and hoisted the steel sections to complete the installations.
Gov. William S. Beardsley signed a full pardon for Ernest Ole Lindquist 65 former forgotten man of the town prison. Pardoned to aid eligibility for citizenship after 42 years on a life term for a 1909 Carroll policeman killing. Lindquist married widow Addie Jackson in Indianola after parole and faced McCarran Act deportation as an alien with two crimes.
All Washington Chamber of Commerce members and spouses are urged to attend the annual dinner meeting Thursday at the VFW hall. Chamber officials note important business matters will come before the group. Reservations by phone or office are due before 10 a.m. Wednesday and tickets by noon Wednesday. A panel discussion will entertain.
Directors of the Washington County Beef Producers Association will meet Wednesday night to outline plans for the group’s annual tour. Elmer Wenger serves as the board president.
Mrs Elizabeth Pierce 75 of Columbus Junction died Monday at Restopia nursing home after two weeks as a patient. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday Stacy funeral home Columbus Junction with Rev George Pennington officiating. Burial in Columbus City cemetery. Born Feb 14 1878 in Cairo Illinois she married Elton Pierce in 1911. Survived by one brother Robert Davenport six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Rev. Paul J. Hindman of Mineola Kansas opens a week of special services at the Associate Presbyterian Church in Washington on Wednesday October 7 at 7 20 p m. The theme is Some Spiritual Gift. Services run each evening through Tuesday October 18 at 7 26 p m with Saturday service at 2 p m.
Gerald Niemann won first place and Gerald Howell placed second in an extemporaneous speaking contest at the Royal Young Peoples meeting. The pair will compete next at a district meet in Fairfield.

Lloyd E. Latta a native of Washington and longtime attorney died Monday after a long illness at 4 p.m. He practiced in Washington over 50 years then in New York and other cities before retiring in Jackson Michigan Funeral services will be held in Vassar Wednesday afternoon Survivors include his wife Martha Samson Latta daughter Martha Jewbel Hart and brothers C P Latta and S K Latta
Richland and Fairfield fire departments fought a morning blaze at the M. Luther McCracken farm five miles southeast of Richland. The fire started in a grainery and spread to a machine shed and a medium sized barn, destroying all three structures and much grain and machinery. An adjacent garage, large barn and wooden windmill tower were also threatened, with most losses covered by insurance.
Judge Beehly ruled in Washington district court that the Wittrig Shantz case preserves the original contract while the petition was dismissed. Margaret Wittrig sought a lien on the Daniel Schantz farm to secure wages claimed due at Schantz’s death under a written 1950 agreement.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Wittrig, 81, will be held at 2 p m at the Wayland Mennonite church. The body lies at Zehr funeral home until 1 p m, then to the church with the casket open from 1 to 2 p m. Burial will be in Bicher cemetery.
