Name Candidates In Tall Corn Contest

Sik girls were named today as candidates for Tall Corn Queen in connection with this year's Evening Journal Tall Corn contest. Jesse Radda, general chairman, reports that these girls will be candidates Colleen Phelps Connie Keyser Bertriy Palmer Gelaine Patterson Margery Godlove and Janet Koehler. Each entrant will be entitled to cast a vote for her favorite candidate. A number of prizes will be offered the girl elected queen. Wayne Brock will judge and measure the stalks with Jim Schwerzler Bessie Schmidt and Carla Caldwell assisting.

Abandon Search For Missing Seamen After Southern Isles Sinks

The Coast Guard will end the nightfall search for 15 missing seamen from the Southern Isles wrecked in the Atlantic. The Cherokee reported little chance of survivors after about 36 hours. 17 dead in total. Survivors and four dead were aboard the Cherokee rescued by the Charlotte Sykes, with planes and merchant ships aiding earlier.

Reign At Columbus Junction Homecoming Queen and King Crowned

Lor etta Griffin and Ronnie Hill were crowned Homecoming Queen and King after a Columbus Junction New London game won 13 to 7. A parade and homecoming dance followed with prizes for floats, costumes, bikes, dolls and pet entries awarded to local students and groups.

British Official Ambushed in Malay Jungle

Sir Henry Gurney the British high commissioner in Malaya was ambushed and killed on a jungle road near Fraser's Hill in central Malay. Lady Gurney survived. The attackers were described as bandits linked to Communist guerrillas active in the region since 1948.

Stassen Seeks Subpoena For Vandenberg Diary On China Policy

Former Minnesota governor Stassen told Senate investigators he may prove his China policy charges by subpoenaing the personal diary of the late Senator Arthur Vandenberg. He cited Vandenberg Jr saying the diary would corroborate his testimony. The diary is owned by the New York Herald Tribune syndicate and Houghton Mifflin.

New Draft Policy Applies to Married Men Before Christmas

The army plans to discharge recalled enlisted men by December 20 with the first childless married draftees moving in to replace them. Selective Service will reclassify about 500000 childless married men for possible induction as older married men are taken first. Officers and other reserves remain unchanged.

Mrs Mae Werner 81 Dies at Home in Washington

Mae Werner age 81 died from a heart attack Friday afternoon at her home 108 West Jefferson street Washington. Funeral services set for 2 pm Monday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Dr BK Honey in charge. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Born August 10 1870 in Washington she was daughter of Wilford L and Narcissa Saville Humston. She married Fred W Werner October 20 1908 in Washington and lived in Brighton Missouri before returning to Washington in 1915. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church. Surviving are nieces and nephews.
