Des Moines reports Iowa surpassed its third war loan drive quota with 197.9 million dollars in bond sales. Iowans approached deadlines with 42 million in series E bonds and a 58 million target, with officials awaiting late reports to meet the overall state goal.
Washington county war finance chairman G E Mace reported total third war loan bond purchases reach 1 051 916 25 dollars about 20 000 over the county quota of 1 052 000 with expectations of larger additions before tabulations close. Banks led weekly gains with towns like Washington Riverside Wellman West Chester and Crawfordsville exceeding their quotas. Townships fell short though some individuals purchased more than subscribed. results cited as best yet in county since war bond program began.
The YMC A community room in memory of Captain Robert H. Shannon was rededicated at a reception for over 100 friends involved in the redecorating. Brigadier General R. Ek. O'Neill presented Shannon's medals to his next of kin and Richard H. MecCleery delivered the dedicatory address.
The state conservation commission announced five new counties Polk Dallas Jackson Delaware Dubuque join quail shooting from November 1 to 30 along with an expanded list. Bag limit eight birds and hunting hours 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The pheasant season for 38 counties runs 37 days from October 28 to December 3 with a six bird bag limit, one hen allowed.
Fort Dodge police promoted Walter Berg to sergeant and Richard Porter to second year patrolman after they captured Thomas Runyon, an escaped slaver and bank robber, on September 17. Both officers had prior commendations from Gov. B. B. Hick enlooper and Fort Madison penitentiary Warden Percy Lainson.
The New Haven Baptist Church west of Washington plans a two day diamond anniversary celebration on October 10 and 11. Services start at 10 A M with a communion service followed by Dr. Frank Anderson of the Iowa State Convention Des Moines as guest speaker. A noon potluck dinner will be served and afternoon services will highlight remaining members and letters from absent friends.
Estimated plan says 27 million motorists could trim driving to five thousand miles in 1943, saving more than 17 million tires. The recommendation targets reducing wear and tire use across the population.
The church plans a multi day celebration with guest Rev B H Ward director of the Iowa Board of Promotion speaking, afternoon services by former pastors, and Ada Hillis of Kalona delivering the closing address. A history booklet detailing the church building, organization, and past pastors will be sold for 25 cents. Washington county and neighboring counties are invited.
Stabilization Director Fred M. Vinson ordered limited wholesale and retail milk price increases in towns with 25 000 or fewer to ease shortages. Retail rises capped at two cents a quart. raises over one cent a quart or over March 1942 levels require Washington approval. Regional OPA offices will decide when local shortages arise from price disparities or war cost conditions. Des Moines and Washington offices report no formal protest or applications yet.
United States. Washington D C October 6 Republican members of the house ways and means committee issued a joint statement denouncing the administration tax program as beyond what the average person can pay The statement echoed earlier remarks by committee chair Robert L Doughton and called for budget economies before raising taxes It cited John Taber as saying 40 percent of the program could be cut without harming the war effort The turmoil over the plan also heightened calls to remove treasury secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr with Fred M Vinson touted as a possible replacement.
A public meeting is planned October 12 at 8:00 p m at the high school where Col Joe Leedom will present a War Service Citation and banner to Washington County as one of four top civilian defense groups in Iowa. About 75 local volunteers with 500 hours or more will receive service pins. The event may include Rodney Selby and Edward Kimball.
DES MOINES R W Nebergall chief of the state bureau of investigation announced the arrest of four men and the break up of a tri county robbery ring. The four men are charged with breaking into nine places and one car theft in Marshall Poweshiek and Iowa counties. They were arrested Tuesday after an investigation by Delbert Murray state agent and Milford Engelbert Iowa county sheriff who had asked the state bureau for aid.
Mrs G E Mead age 70 of Cedar Rapids sister of Mrs R D Page of Washington died early this morning at her home. Mrs Page was with her at the time. Ellen Cowger daughter of Sandy H and Hannah Stafford Cowger born Sept 23 1873 in Washington spent her girlhood here. Mrs D L Rohrer daughter of Mrs Page will go to Cedar Rapids this evening for the funeral service.
Washington fire department to night distributes tickets for the annual firemen's ball at the Rendezvous with music by Jimmy Smith and his orchestra. Proceeds fund the death benefit fund now around 1000 dollars. last year about 200 couples attended. Tickets are 1.25 a couple in advance, 1.50 at the door on Nov 11, extra ladies 50 cents. A 25 dollar war bond prize will be given. attendance enters the drawing. Tickets available at multiple local shops and cafes. committee includes Denison and several named locals.
Tom Carson and Ralph Martin led a Saturday scrap drive in Washington wards one and two reporting 4 750 pounds of paper and about 500 pounds of processed tin cans collected. Four high school boys and Camp truck support aided the effort. Next Saturday October 9 will cover wards three and four with public pickup reminders and a 4000 pound goal for ward three.
The St. Louis Cardinals tied the World Series at one game each by defeating the New York Giants 4 to 3. Pitcher Dan Danninger earned the victory as the Spurses kept the game tight through the late innings in New York.
Allied 5th Army troops push toward Rome as they breach the Volturno line north of Naples. Aversa and Maddaloni fall to Clark’s forces eight and 14 miles north and northeast of Naples. British 8th Army assaults near the Biferno river, while reserves move in to pressure German lines as Rome nears, with higher Allied planes keeping defenses off balance.
Washington milk producers and distributors led by J. D. Morrison Jr prepare a statement to send to the War Food Administration. They urge an immediate 50 cent per hundredweight price increase by Oct 20 to avoid a milk shortage, saying current pricing only breaks even for producers. A telegram from Senator Gillette supported local efforts as a remedy.
