War casualties surpass 100000 in Vietnam conflict

UPI reports American casualties exceed 101,000 since January 1961 with 13,643 killed, 86,635 wounded and 756 missing or captured. Fresh fighting erupts in South Vietnam as U.S. air raids target Hanoi Haiphong and DMZ. 689th American plane shot down. 228,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong deaths listed, plus 50,000 South Vietnamese fatalities in combat.

Robbers steal Du Ponts Grand Duke Mikhailovitch coins in Miami

Five hooded gunmen tied up Willis H. Du Pont family at their Coconut Grove home early today and fled with a 1.5 million Grand Duke Mikhailovitch coin collection, about 50 thousand dollars in jewelry and five thousand in cash. They warned of violence, wore hoods, and left in the Du Pont Cadillac, later abandoning it.

Liberals Win Victory In Senate Over Poverty War Funds

Senate liberals led by the Kennedy brothers blocked a Republican move to cut 198 million from the Office of Economic Opportunity authorization as the anti poverty war neared final passage at 2.26 billion dollars. Democrats allied with conservatives to strip the ghetto jobs program, but the Kenneys and Javits pushed to preserve funding while Mansfield shifted votes. Kennedy emphasized private enterprise involvement as essential to aid urban poor communities.

Marie Jones Wins State 4-H Food and Nutrition Award

Marie Jones 18 of Crawfordsville received Iowa State 4-H Award in Food and Nutrition for 1967. She earns a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago November 26 30 with 29 Iowa delegates and will represent Iowa at the national level. Jones has 7 years in 4-H with Cloverleaf and Crooked Creek Cloverettes, pursuing projects from home furnishings to gardening. She is a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in food and nutrition, a 1967 WACO High School valedictorian, and daughter of Mr and Mrs John H Jones.

Tax case hearing continued in Davenport suit
