In Washington the Schley court of inquiry heard Rayner urge summoning Admiral Sampson over a wording dispute in the Dear Schley dispatch. Rayner pressed for Sampson as a witness after arguing the word Santiago was a slip for Cienfuegos. The proceeding was adjourned with Lemly set to finish next week and Cook or NFuer to testify for the defense.
Lieutenant Chas W Dyson of the bureau of steam engineers testified as an expert on coal usage for blockading ships. He showed charts detailing daily coal needs at ten knots and on blockade duty for the Brooklyn Massachusetts Iowa Texas and Marblehead with assumed averages. He cited days of supply to reach Key West via Yucatan or Windward passages and noted a log discrepancy between sailing distances and coal burned.
Lieutenant Commander Albion Hodgson, a witness in a case involving Admiral Schley, recounts the start of the action off Santiago on July 3, 1808. Both yachts crossed the finish within sight of each other after a tight forty nine second gap at the turn, amid strong winds and dramatic rail to rail approach.

Lemars Iowa October 5 T F Ward ex vice president of Lemars National bank indicted by the federal grand jury on seven counts. The first accuses him of embezzling 13000 dollars and the other six charge fraudulent entries. Ward pleads not guilty and posts 7500 dollars bond.
Peru Indiana reports two inches of snow in the northern part of Miami county on Thursday. A preceding hailstorm and a sharp drop in temperature to near freezing accompanied the snowfall, with Macy noting snow depths exceeding two inches.
Oshkosh Wis Oct 5 Mrs John Stephenson wife of Alderman Stephenson was instantly killed and her son was probably fatally injured in a runaway accident yesterday.

At the Wisconsin Congregational convention in Milwaukee on October 5, Rev. H. W. Carter wore a woman's engagement ring while recounting a donor tale. George W. Smith a prominent state politician and orator died from a suicide attempt in Jacksonville after months of nervous prostration. In Huntingdon Tennessee on October 5 a gang of eight to ten broke into the jailhouse Thursday night and shot Walter McClennon McClen non to death. He had been arrested for an assault on C P Dalton a prominent citizen. Three bullets entered his head and a rope was found around his neck.
In Marshall Missouri on October 5 W M Thomas shot and fatally wounded his sweetheart Miss Minnie Hayse after finding Arthur Cox with her. Thomas had threatened to kill both and then killed himself.
Petersburg Indiana on October 5 two men, Tohn Mc Coy and Henry Darnell, were fatally harmed when dynamite exploded prematurely during blasting. McCoy suffered the loss of a leg and severe burns, while Darnell sustained serious injuries to his side and limbs. both are expected to die.
In Omaha on Thursday night Jacob Fisher a fisherman shot and killed his son John Fisher aged 33 during a quarrel in which the son is said to have threatened the life of both parents.
Workmen drilling a well on John Carpenter's farm north of Kendallville Indiana tapped a natural gas flow at about 600 feet. A rumbling sound accompanied the blowout and ignition produced a flame about fifty feet high. Landmen from various groups rushed to the site seeking leases.
