Origins and evolution of 4-H in Iowa and beyond

Julia Gamon traces 4-H roots from late 19th century farm and home education to formal clubs shaped by A B Graham and Cap Miller. Iowa leaders adopted three leaf clover emblems by 1907 and 4-H became national with the 1911 emblem adoption and 1914 Smith Lever Act. Early projects focused on farm and home skills, later expanding to health, leadership, arts, recreation, and diverse urban programs.
