Wallace Fagen announces Washington County treasurer’s office will close Thursday and Friday so all staff may attend the annual County Officers School of Instruction. The program covers changes in state laws affecting county work and aims to benefit county operations.
Mrs Ray wife of Iowa's governor will visit Washington Friday for a brief stop and participate in the formal opening of Washington County Republican headquarters at 10 30 am in the Jarvis Appliance Store building The plan calls for her plane to land in time for a 9 30 am greeting on the north side of the square Local residents are urged to meet Mrs Ray during one of her two stops in Washington Friday
Ainsworth fire department responded Tuesday night to a blaze north of Ainsworth near the Gardner corner. A corn sheller owned by Max White caught fire when a rod in the motor failed, burning the motor but leaving the rest of the equipment intact.
Collins announces David W. Day of Brighton named vice president of corporate development for Collins Radio C. The former North American Rockwell staff VP has previous ties to General Electric and Picker Corporation and the Day family will move to Dallas, Texas. He is brother to Robert Day of Washington and William Day of Brighton.
Police report a bicycle rider, Terry Craig, escaped with bruises after his bike swerved into a car driven by Leora Agnes Siefkas of Washington on East Madison Street. The incident occurred Tuesday when the bicycle and car traveling on East Madison Street collided at 321 South Walton Street.
The charity planned sale runs October 9 to 14 at Wesley House west of the Methodist church from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Volunteers may deliver items to Mangold's TV and Appliance or Wesley House this Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. Pickup service is available at 653-3713.
UPI reports John G. Schmitz vows to defoliate opium poppy fields in China if elected, saying there is no problem taking care of them. He also endorses a three tier school system to address integration, proposing separate black and white schools plus a mixed option.

The 1973 budget plan projects total expenditures of 1 020 111 with an estimated 440 319 from taxes, about 5 000 more than last year. Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev will make an official visit to Washington likely in April 1973 after talks at the White House and Camp David with President Nixon and Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko. Nixon invited Brezhnev during his Moscow visit, with plans to announce after the election.
Bill Simmons and Jerry Beauchamp won a one year county contract for 39009 dollars. They propose a live in headquarters ambulance service to reduce night call delays. They cite prior experience with ASI and aim to operate with attendants living on site to save costs.
A collision on the highway near Pella involved two school buses and a car with a trailer. The high school bus brake failure caused a rear impact, but all parochial students escaped injury. The car occupants and both bus drivers sustained no injuries. damages were minor on the grade school bus and substantial on the high school bus. William Carnes, Vola Carnes, and Vola’s mother were uninjured. Gerald Bruxvoart, driver of the high school bus, reported about 150 dollars in damage.
