Loveless sales tax veto defended in Iowa City speech
The governor's executive assistant defended vetoing a bill raising Iowa sales tax to 2 percent at a seminar for about 150 CPAs. Robert Johnson, on leave from the University of Iowa, said the 22 percent tax would have netted 32 million by July 1 1958 and warned per pupil school aid would lock in that basis. Johnson said he supports school aid but not on a per pupil basis.
