Commended for Merit Scholarship at Washington High

Washington Community High School announced two students earned Letters of Commendation for high performance on the 1969 NMSQT. Nancy J. Schneider and John S. Wiggers join 39,000 students nationwide in the upper 2 percent among expected 1970 graduates, just below semifinalists named by NMSC.

Two Dubuque men get 75 years for Belleville Chief murder

Two Dubuque men, Richard Schmitz and William Sweeney, were sentenced to 75 years in prison each for second degree murder in the beating death of Bellevue Police Chief Earl Berendes. Dubuque dancer Allene Kuhse received 3 years suspended and probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy. The case raised questions of first degree murder and prosecutorial conduct as judge Janssen handled pleas and motions. Montreal and Toronto remain original NHL members since 1917.

Brandt to oust Kiesinger as Germany forms new government

Foreign Minister Willy Brandt and Free Democrats reached a coalition agreement to replace Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger. Brandt and Walter Scheel will seek formal party approval and present Brandt to President Heinemann for nomination. If endorsed, parliament votes on Oct. 21 with 254 coalition seats.

California Court Voids Little Lindbergh Kidnapping Law

California Supreme Court, in a 6 1 ruling, invalidated the state Little Lindbergh kidnaping statute as unconstitutional. The justices held that moving a victim during a robbery does not by itself create separate kidnaping liability unless the move substantially raises the risk of harm. Daniels and Simmons convictions overturned. they face other charges.
