A 20 year old Iowa State student from Davenport was arrested over a home made bomb planted on the 46 yard line of the ISU football field. He faced injury to property charges with up to 15 years in jail. He called the act a prank and said no one was injured.
Violence erupted at the Western Iowa Park Co plant in Harlan Iowa as striking workers, armed with bricks rocks and guns, chased workers from the grounds. An injunction limiting pickets to eight was issued by Judge Bennett Cullison and the mob began dispersing after the order. Ed Hannan said several mobile trailers were overturned and multiple workers were injured. Local 1225 UPWA claimed Mexican workers from Los Angeles sparked the unrest amid a labor dispute with rival unions. Sheriff deputies from surrounding counties and the Iowa National Guard were mobilized. Highway Patrol kept Iowa 64 open and city law enforcement remained at the plant.
Democrat E B Smith argues that current military steps in Vietnam could end the war without inviting Red China. He opposes broad bombing that might widen the war, cites Haiphong mining as risky, and contrasts views with Miller while noting uncertainties about war declarations and potential outcomes.
U S infantry and 1st Air Cavalry pursue a battered Viet Cong force through a coastal valley 35 miles northeast of Saigon, claiming 219 enemy killed in two days. Across the DMZ, B52s and fighter bombers pound bases and routes while 23 inmates freed from a Viet Cong camp are evacuated by helicopter. One American soldier is killed by friendly fire during the operations.
Senator Miller campaigns for re election arguing for precision bombing of logistics targets in North Vietnam while rejecting charges of advocating mass bombing. He cites hospital scenes in Vietnam to argue against partisan politics and supports measured action including petroleum point strikes to slow enemy supply lines. He notes timing of White House action and forecasts an effect after several months of operations.
UPI report from Bellevue Iowa where Senator Jack Miller urged trimming federal spending to combat inflation. He warned that without cuts a sweeping tax increase could follow after the election, noting per person federal costs rising from 193 in 1960 to 639 this year and predicting spending would rise about 50 percent above 1960 levels by year end.
Iowa elective Service Director Col Glenn Bowles announced college qualification tests on November 18 and 19 in 13 Iowa cities. Scores will guide, not decide, deferment eligibility for students. Applications available at colleges, universities, or local draft boards. postmark by October 21. Test sites include Ames, Burlington, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Decorah, Des Moines, Dubuque, Estherville, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, Mason City, and Sioux City.
Hurricane Inez rare split spawns a Nassau tornado that killed a 15 month old child and wounded four as roofs ripped away and homes flooded. The hurricane, moving north northeast at seven mph, threatened Abaco and Grand Bahama with 100 mph winds, four to eight foot tides, and gale warnings along the Florida coast.
