Robert Dillard misplaced his checkbook and wallet while hunting. His uncle Andrew Dillard shot a dove in the same area, and the bird landed near the nephew’s wallet and checkbook.
The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 2 to 1 at Ebbets Field in Game 1 of the World Series. Mantle hit a first‑inning homer to put New York ahead, while Don Budd? and Berra contributed, with Maglie matching Ford in a tight pitching duel as Brooklyn rallied but fell short in the early showdown.
Bucky O'Connor, Iowa State coach, spoke to Washington Y's Men in the YMCA community room. He projected a weaker Hawkeyes team than last season but expected strong Big Ten play and praised current freshmen prospects. The group noted 72 couples signed for this year's Y's Men bridge marathon and Fairfield guests discussed starting a local club. Loras Schissel aged 17 of New Hampton was found dead in his car after becoming ill while working in a bean factory. Authorities say his head was wedged under the back seat. he apparently suffocated. He was the son of Mrs. Bert Schissel.
Students at Washington High School completed the election of class officers for the current year. Senior officers include Mike Flynn as president and Karen Swanson as treasurer with Marilyn Wilson as secretary and Mark Hensel as vice president. Junior and sophomore and freshman officers are listed with presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, and treasurers.
DES MOINES UP The National Farmers Organization in Iowa will not endorse any congressional candidates, citing choice of good men in both parties. Earlier they declined endorsements for governor and other state offices. Board opposes Sen Rourke Hickenlooper and Rep Paul Cunningham, both Republicans up for re election. The group plans a merger with the Association of Independent Dairy Farmers to form a major state farm organization.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson defended the Eisenhower administration for taking constructive action for family farms and accused Democrats of misleading statements. He outlined a 18 state swing, addressed farm issues built over 10 years, and highlighted shifts from mule and plow farming to modern methods.
Adlai E. Stevenson toured Pennsylvania by train and car to attack President Eisenhower over what he called a failure of leadership in aiding economically depressed coal areas. He criticized both Democratic and administration bills for lack of final House passage, and charged the President with indifference to local conditions. He planned a Pittsburgh speech and a television rebuttal in response to Eisenhower’s recent remarks.
Soviet Foreign Minister Dmitri Shepilov arrived in New York for his first U N session since taking the post. He said a reasonable Suez settlement could be found in the Security Council debate and warned against approaches from positions of strength. He pledged USSR to help but stressed negotiations must serve Egypt and all canal users.
The United Mine Workers approve a two step wage increase totaling 2.40 dollars per day for about 200000 soft coal miners. The pact, described as the greatest the union has negotiated, becomes effective next April and was negotiated secretly by John L. Lewis and Bituminous Coal Operators Assn. officials.
A 42 year old Wilton Junction businessman pleaded innocent to 15 counts of fraud over 625000 in stock sales tied to Gruemmer Indian Carbonic Ltd. The government alleges he issued limited partnership agreements and claimed a Des Moines area well would produce liquid carbon dioxide for sale to the government.
Chicago authorities investigated arson after a $100000 blaze tore through a second deck section of Comiskey Park destroying the press box. Fire Lt. Walter Reilly collapsed while fighting the extra alarm blaze as flames rose to 40 feet. The press box and booths were ruined and rebuilding timed to a Sunday Cardinals Giants game was doubtful.
Herschel Loveless Democrat candidate for governor criticizes Iowa Tax Study Committee for delaying findings citing Gov Hoegh and a partisan makeup. He argues the panel is nonpartisan yet has only one Democrat among eight lawmakers and says a minority report will come after the November 6 election.
Juanita McCabe, 12, a Fairfield junior high student, was killed Tuesday when struck by a Rock Island freight train at a crossing. Authorities said she rode her bicycle in front of the train and was hurled 88 feet. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles McCabe who recently moved to Fairfield from Milan.
A Red Cross First Aid course will start Thursday evening at 7 30 to 9 59 with nine two hour lessons. Instructor Harlan Newhart leads the class in the chapter office on the north side of the square. Additional classes will be formed. interested persons should call the Red Cross office.
A U S Air Force C124 Globemaster crashed on landing at Charleston AFB South Carolina from Bermuda. Three crew died seven injured. The craft missed the runway by a couple of hundred feet and burst into flames destroying the aircraft except for the tail section.
A local business partnership, formed October 1 1946 with the purchase of the Piggly Wiggly from Albert Orcutt, marks ten years of operation at the newly moved U Save store on the northwest square. A thank you weekend is planned Thursday through Saturday with details in the paper.
London reports on Moscow Radio stating Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union are getting closer. The broadcast cites growing cooperation and seeks Tito's backing for a broader Middle East reach, noting Yugoslavia's support of Egypt's Suez Canal takeover as part of the context.
In Des Moines 9 year old Michael Murphy died after his bicycle collided with a car driven by 21 year old Clifford C Musselman as he rode from a Cub Scout meeting. Police say he rode out of a school entrance and was struck.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson accused President Eisenhower of making misleading statements about Democratic cooperation. He said the 84th Congress worked with the administration more than the 83rd did and mocked Eisenhower attending the World Series opener. Johnson claimed Republicans fear the election and noted Eisenhower once praised his Senate leadership.
Funeral services for Mose D. Miller 74 were held at East Union Mennonite church Kalona with Rev Simon Gingerich and A Lloyd Swartzendruber in charge. He died in a Milford Nebraska rest home Tuesday and was born December 28 1877 in Kalona. Burial will be in Elida Ohio. Survived by brother Alva and sister Mrs Dan J Fisher both of Kalona.
The Bethlehem Commandery Knights Templar held its annual inspection at the Masonic temple with visitors from Des Moines Knoxville Carroll Oelwein Cedar Rapids and other Iowa towns. The event led by inspecting officer Marc E. Wicks drew the largest attendance in local history following a 200-person dinner at the Methodist church and a ladies program led by Mrs. Lee Baird.

Continued fair weather with a slight cooling trend into Friday and a five day forecast showing near normal to slightly above normal temperatures regionally.
