Crawfordsville city events mark 82 year old Dr N J Lease retirement after 59 years of practice. A parade band horse show basket dinner and school activities are scheduled for Wednesday Oct 10 starting at 10 30 a m. The baby parade will feature children born with Dr Lease.
Sen Richard Nixon charges William M Boyle Jr paid an RFC official $1261 and deducted it from his 1949 income tax after becoming Democratic national chairman. The money allegedly went to H Turney Gratz, later an Boyle aide, tied to Ameri can Lithefold Corp loans. Hoey will decide whether Gratz is summoned.
Washington fire chief Maynard Brown explains that volunteer firefighters may display blue warning lights on their own vehicles when responding to incidents. State law authorizes the use of the lights to identify volunteers who lack other official insignia, and drivers are urged to pull over and give right of way to emergency personnel.
Iowa purchases of United States Defense bonds totalled 4 950 418 by the end of week three. Don Maxwell county chairman reports series KE F and G bond sales in the county at 37 988 66. The county reached 16 five percent of its drive quota. The chairman notes unreported bank sales may raise totals.
Tony Baldine a 35 year old business agent of local 705 Chicago trucks drivers chauffeurs and helpers union and three women companions escaped a bomb attack on his car. The blast shattered the vehicle injured Baldine and companions with cuts bruises and shock. Police called the explosion an attempt to kill Baldine and noted it was the third attack on a union official in six months.
Flor ida truck farmers report crop losses totaling about a million dollars after a tropical storm drenched the Gold Coast with 60 mph winds. The system flooded fields, capsized boats, and damaged homes as it moved toward the open Atlantic. The weather center placed the storm center about 320 miles east of Brunswick, Georgia.
Riverside residents near Ralph Chorpening’s farm gather for an annual outdoors apple butter event. Six bushels are peeled coreed and quartered before cooking in an iron kettle over a trench fire. The process begins at 6 40 a m with careful stirring and staged additions of apples.

In Evansdale Iowa two youngsters Harold Truesdell age two and James 16 months burned to death in a one room cabin fire. The mother had left to call a neighbor and returned to a blaze too intense to enter. Firemen fought the flames but could not save the children. The father was at work at John Deere in nearby Waterloo. A kerosene stove explosion is suspected as the possible cause.
Junior Chamber of Commerce members and their guests are invited to a hobo party next Tuesday evening October 9. The committee asks attendees to meet at the bandstand in Central Park at 7 pm and to dress for the occasion. Other details remain secret.

The battles extend from hills north of Seoul to the Sea of Japan as the battleship New Jersey pounds shore defenses with 16 inch guns.
Des Moines report shows all farm product price index down to 325 percent of the 1909 14 average from the prior month. Crop prices rose slightly while hog prices fell, pulling the overall index lower though livestock prices excluding hogs rose modestly.
Funeral services for Mrs Cora Shuster were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Jones funeral home with Rev. Earl Longfellow in charge. Pallbearers were Warren Stewart, Ben Briley, Don Whitlatch and Frank Green wood. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.

Cupid appears active in Washington County as a marriage license was issued today at the courthouse to Dennis D. Shetler of Kalona and Katie Ann Miller of Riverside. This is the first license issued since September 22.
Federal Commissioner M O Cunningham ruled Omaha cigar store clerk Tony Joe Biase must stand trial as an accomplice to Kenneth Kitts in the 1948 Hurley bank burglary. A preliminary hearing established Biase as the man named in the federal indictment with Kitts and Charles Robinson, clearing the way for Biase to be moved to South Dakota for trial.
