A Burlington column reports an ordinance proposal requiring automobiles to stop completely at school crossings during class times and dismissal. The city council would adopt the plan if it materializes with stop signs installed by the department of public safety, managed by school patrols and centered at crossings.
Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa Law College will chair the twenty third annual university homecoming on November 8 and 9. He succeeds Prof. F. C. Ensign who has held the post since 1917.
The Muscatine Island Sweet Potato club will hold a study discussion and judging at the experimental station near Conesville. About 25 samples will be brought by the boys for discussion on storage and seed, with seed and show sweet potatoes to be selected.
Vera Mae Heilman representing Benton county won the milk maid contest in the hippodrome at the Dairy Cattle Congress by drawing nine pounds four ounces of milk from a Holstein cow in three minutes. Nine milk maids competed at Keystone venue.

Two men robbed the Friedlander Jewelry store in Memphis today escaping with jewels valued between 25,000 and 140,000 dollars. Two store employees were bound with wire during the robbery.
In Chicago two bandits who robbed a bank messenger at Union Railroad station shot and killed Policeman William Stringfellow, 64, as he arrived on the scene.

Coroner Dr W 8 Kyle ruled the death of Joseph William Laney a death by own action and no inquest was needed. Laney, about 62, hanged himself in a barn on the Riverside area farm where he had lived for years. He leaves a wife Mrs June Foster of Muscatine, a stepdaughter, four brothers Albert Frank John and Edward, and three sisters. Born on a farm near Riverside, he was a lifelong resident and son of August and Mary Laney.
Eleven witnesses including Verne Marshall and H M Havner have been subpoenaed in Woodbury County to testify as efforts proceed to quash an indictment against Joe Gagen tied to a statewide gambling conspiracy. Attorney General Edward O Connor's trial on a grand jury indictment will be among the first cases next week before Special Judge Earl Peters.
Detroit Tigers lead Chicago Cubs 8 to 3 after seven innings at Detroit. Tigers scored four in the first, then three more in the fourth. Gehringer and Greenberg homer, White and Cochrane drive runs. Cubs tally in fifth on Jurges hit and an error.
