Pipe Arch Bridge Over Sydburs River In Boston Water System
An engineering curiosity reportedly unique to this country with one parallel in Europe, the pipe aurel bridge spans eighty feet over the Sydburs river and carries Boston's water supply. The steel pipe is seven and a half feet in diameter and rises five and a half feet above the center line. Water pressure on the supports is borne by a forty foot thick concrete mass behind each abutment. A hand railed foot bridge runs along the curved top. The pipe arch is five eighths of an inch thick.
