United Press International reports Navy Lt. Markham L. Gartley, among three POWs homeward last week, said his Vietnamese captors were humane though the experience was not easy. He described conditions as no bed of roses and noted the struggle during captivity.

Consumers to Speak Up Through Joint Extension Program

Consumers to get special attention under a Consumer-Business Communications Program in Washington a joint Iowa State University Extension and Chamber of Commerce effort. Richard Horak says businesses want consumer opinions and the survey will let the public express likes and dislikes in a brief form. Survey results are computer tabulated at Iowa State and shared with local businesses to improve service. copies are at the county extension office.

National 4-H Week Observed With County Leaders and Clubs

Washington County marks National 4-H Week October 17 with 4-H members, leaders, parents, and friends participating. The county shows an 11 percent membership rise aided by two new iris clubs Eager Beavers and leaderettes and lists adult leaders across numerous clubs and future-year additions.

Social Security beneficiaries to gain 20 percent raise in five-county district

The Burlington Social Security district reports a 20 percent benefit increase approved by Congress. Bomb threat disrupts Kirkwood Linn Hall

Cedar Rapids police sealed Linn Hall at Kirkwood Community College after a custodian found an activated bomb concealed in the ceiling of a second floor restroom. Authorities described three boxes with separate chemical explosive devices and canceled classes for the rest of the day.

Conservation honors listed in Iowa 1972 awards

Two Washington County farmers win East Central Region honors in the 1972 Iowa Si Conservation Achievement Program. Sikke Temple of Keota wins owner-operator. Robert Spera of Kalamazoo and Leroy Yeggy of Riverside win landlord-tenant. Temple's 240 acre rolling farm features terraces and waterways. The Spera farm includes stockwater pond, erosion control dams, terraces, and contouring with chisel plowing. The Yeggy family occupies an adjoining farm with four children.

Kirkwood Offers Evening Adult Education In Washington
