Four Die as Bus Collides With Freight Train Near Waterloo
A Union Pacific freight train hit a Waterloo Public School bus at a country crossing west of Waterloo Nebraska killing four and injuring at least nine. The 97-car train traveled about 48 mph and struck near the bus rear wheel tossing seats up to 50 feet. Victims were taken to Waterloo and Omaha area hospitals with most injuries non life threatening.

Turner to file motion change of venue in tax suit
Iowa Attorney General Richard Turner said he will file a motion to move the case from Scott County District Court to Polk County, arguing the Tax Commission should be sued there. The suit, filed Sept. 28 by newspapers, radio and TV stations, ad agencies and advertisers, seeks to halt the new 3 percent services tax and declares it unconstitutional. Turner expects possible outside counsel but says his office can defend the measure. outside help was described as very likely.

Two men wounded in Waterloo shooting incident
In Waterloo Iowa two men Alvin Holmes 30 of Durant Mississippi and Leon Thurmond 35 of Waterloo were injured when an unattended .22 caliber automatic rifle fell from a corner and discharged four or five times while they had been hunting and later when investigating the weapon both were taken to a hospital in good condition. Both men work for the Illinois Central Railroad.
