The Lake Darling Youth Center, a non profit summer camp for organized youth groups, hosted 2226 participants in 1961 with 1856 overnight campers. Four Are Killed In Detroit Plastics Plant Blast
A 8 15 am explosion and ensuing two alarm fire at Sparling Plastics Industries in Detroit killed four people and seriously injured at least seven others. Red Cross Plans December Cookie Quota For Veterans Hospital
Washington County American Red Cross chapter sets a quota of 40 dozen cookies each of the first two weeks of December for the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services for about 60 year old Mrs. Ora Lecker will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at Powell Funeral Home Wellman with Rev Jerry Beltz officiating. Burial will be in Piersol Cemetery northwest of Weilman. She died over the past weekend at Macon Missouri where she had lived for years. Survivors include two sons Roy of Cairo Missouri and Dale of Bonntere Missouri a daughter Mrs James Fox of Meadville Missouri three sisters Mrs Bessie Hall of Millersburg Mrs Alma Rickey and Mrs Ella Reddick, Rock Island Illinois. United Press International reports the 1961 Iowa traffic fatality toll climbed to 470 with seven deaths over the weekend, plus a later injury death. The incidents included four single-vehicle wrecks involving a farm tractor, a car leaving the road near Hawarden, a crash near Atlantic, and another on interstates near Osceola. Additional fatalities occurred in Story County and Ames areas, with out-of-state deaths noted in Pennsylvania and Illinois.
