Fiesta organizers announce outdoor free events on the square on Thursday Oct 11. Howdy Roberts and a WMT barn dance show start at 7 30 pm after Sorden accordion band at 7 pm with no admission. A 9 pm to 1 am Armory dance features Hal Wiese and his orchestra.
Des Moines reports private funeral services for Fred W. Fitch age 81 a Boone Iowa barber turned cosmetics magnate who built a multi million dollar hair tonic business from a barn start in 1892. Fitch died after a year long illness and had been bedfast since surgery last March. He promoted his ideal hair growth and dandruff cure through public relations and helped grow the firm to about 400 employees and twenty products with his first wife.
Vernon Wittrig Washington city councilman spoke to the Presbyterian Men’s Brotherhood Monday night. He outlined ten traits of a councilman drawn from an Iowa League of Municipalities article. S. A. Munson presided as president and the Vigilant Sunday school class catered the dinner.
Legislator Merv Ludwig of Johnson County spoke to the local Rotary Club urging youth to embrace the ideals of service and the dignity of labor. He led a question period and discussed the problem with Representative Harry Ratusever introducing him. Francis Manecold of KNIC attended.
An attorney urged Washington city council to overturn a prior decision denying a beer permit on East Washington street near the State Theater. The council again voted 4 to 2 against the permit, with the same members supporting the previous ruling. The matter has stirred petitions from local residents over months. The meeting also approved bids and authorized the sale of an old city tire truck stored outside City Hall.
Franz S. Finley a well known Mt. Pleasant attorney died suddenly this morning after illness. Funeral services are tentatively set for Friday afternoon with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs Finley former Kathleen Jeffrey and a daughter Jean survive.
A Monday 10 55 collision on Highway 218 one mile south of the 218 22 junction damaged two trucks. Henry Graber of Wayland pulled out into 218 from a cross street and was hit by Harold Kueneman of route five Iowa City. Kueneman’s truck sustained 500 dollars in damage while the other received 25 dollars.
The Brooklyn Dodgers, with Jackie Robinson star, led the New York Giants 5 to 0 in the sixth inning with two outs when rain stopped play in the second playoff game for the National League pennant.
Washington county Farm Bureau hosts its annual meeting at Crawfordsville high school on Monday October 15 a dinner meeting served by Crawfordsville Methodist church women with tickets from township directors or the Farm Bureau office in Washington. Agenda includes adoption of resolutions and election of county officers with resolutions to be sent to the state convention and discussed there. Al Hagen state organization director will speak titled The Big Job Ahead in Farm Bureau.
A newly organized 4-H band will play at 11 am during the Washington Corn Fiesta on October 11. More than 50 members have shown interest and will practice Thursday October 4 at 7 50 pm in the Farm Bureau building. Participants include 4-H members from Wellman Ainsworth Crawfordsville West Chester Brighton Kalona and Washington high schools. Milo Sorden will furnish the music and direct the concert.
GOP national chairman Guy George Gabrielson received an unanimous vote of confidence from the party's executive committee. He plans to testify before Senate investigators about negotiations with the Reconstruction Finance Corp for Carthage Hydrocol, which secured an $18,500 million loan. Senator John J. Williams urged resignation for both Gabrielson and William M. Boyle Jr.
The third in a series of Fifth Sunday Fellowship meetings was held at Kinross First Christian Church in Keo kuk and Washington County on Sunday afternoon September 30. Rev Marguerite Ross Shepard and the Kinross congregation hosted with fifteen towns represented. Speakers included Rev T C Polk of Washington Howard Witting of Pleasant Hill and Rev Clayton Shepard of Keota.

Rawn, born Sept. 14, 1888, in Storm Lake, Iowa, led road paving efforts and city water works construction in Washington and was married to Katherine Boegel in 1913. survivors include wife, son Charles William Rawn of Peoria, Ill., and sister Mrs. W. E. Herbert of Storm Lake.
At least six, possibly seven Russian jets were shot down by 68 U S Sabrejets from the 5th Air Force over northwest Korea as they repelled two Red air waves. No American losses were reported in the half hour battles, part of a larger day tally reaching 289 enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged since November 8, 1960.

Nine fines have been paid in mayor's court recently. Speeding fines were paid by John Edwin Baldrige, Paul Bell, John Allen Stephens, L A Barth, Fred Everly, John H Abbott, Milton E E Ross and Harvey Po Kurtz. Donald W Avers was fined for driving without a tail light and muffler on his car.

A Farm Bureau committee and county seed corn dealers outlined contests for the Washington Corni Gras Fiesta on October 11. Events include a best five ear sample from hybrids, most unusual ear, longest ear, largest ear by weight, and shortest stalk with tassel. Entries must be grown in 1951 and arrive by 4 30 a.m. October 1, with prizes including seed corn and sweepstake awards. The Evening Journal will handle the tall corn contest and central park will be decorated as a corn field.

FBI agents arrested 26 year old Milton Riley in Chicago for floats of up to 50000 in forged checks. Co conspirator William Bronson, seized earlier, allegedly aided the scam using forged credentials with checks cashed in Indianapolis South Bend Philadelphia St Louis and other midwest cities.
Congressman Karl Stefan, a 67 year oldRepublican from Nebraska, died at George Washington University Hospital after an acute cardiovascular collapse. He had been admitted for a routine checkup following severe back and abdominal pains. Stefan's wife and daughter were with him at the time of death.
