In Cedar Rapids a 5 year old boy, Philip Leidigh of Robins, was saved after a road maintenance tractor sank into oozy surface while he played nearby. He was brought to St Luke's hospital for treatment of minor abrasions and a needed bath.
An attempted plot to kidnap former Georgia governor D K Rivers failed when the suspected assailant shot himself in his automobile trailer. Police found three German English dictionaries and a code book, with two letters indicating motives of ransom and political vengeance. FBI examined the items and letters, revealing personal hostility toward Rivers.
Ray Carl Kelley, 24, of Manilla, was convicted in federal court of failing to perform duties required by his selective service board and sentenced to 14 months. He testified he spent 10 to 11 hours monthly in witnessing for Jehovah's Witnesses and asserted his ministerial status. Jurors ruled on selection status and obedience to the draft board.
Mrs Blanche Scott Lee who voted in every election since women gained suffrage learned her citizenship was forfeited by her 30 year old marriage to Canadian George Lee. It was restored in federal court after she produced affidavits and took the oath of allegiance.
