Washington reports the Navy plans to withdraw vessels from active service and assign care-taking crews to meet President Hoover's $60 million cut. The program would reduce active ships from 259 and cut enlisted personnel by about 10,000, with the Army expected to follow by tightening its next year's budget.
Coroner William B. Gibson presided at the Stamford inquest into the death of Benjamin B. Collings. The jury concluded the death was caused by drowning and attributed it to some person or persons unknown.
Up State authorities joined Iowa investigators in a mystery death case after Mary Volker aged 44 was found scantily clad at her brother Dick Volker's farm home in Knoxville Iowa on October 2.
Thomas O'Connor, alleged East St. Louis gangster, found guilty of participation in the nation's greatest bank robbery at Lincoln Nebraska on October 2.
The Iowa national guard detachment in Tipton camps down as Cedar county tests end. About 500 guardsmen go home this week with Cedar county fairgrounds to be deserted by tonight. Veterinarians finished testing 14 879 cattle finding reactors at George Watham and J N Bammier farms with infected animals shipped to Cedar Rapids packing plant. Lenker case concerns contempt for selling cattle after quarantine as Judge Ring ill and may not hear trial tomorrow.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and Mrs. Lindbergh survived a crash when their monoplane plunged into the flood swollen Yangtze near Hankow. Sailors from the British carrier Hermes rescued them uninjured as the craft capsized. the plane will be shipped to Shanghai for repairs. The couple had been surveying flood relief efforts in the area and planned more flights before the accident ended the trip.
Centerville high school travels to face the Demons on Thursday evening October 15. The locals meet a strong section rival in Centerville and face two upcoming games against Muscatine and Winfield slated to be played here in a busy Washington schedule week.
Leon Gleckman a wealthy St Paul politician held by kidnappers for eight days was freed. The ransom amount was not disclosed but believed to be just under 100 thousand dollars.
Authorities failed to capture two youths who robbed the Defiance bank, locked staff in the vault, and fled with $4,19 in cash. A flood relief official accompanied the bandits, while an ongoing manhunt continued.
The Southeastern Iowa Medical Society wrapped its program with a banquet at the YMCA community room last night. About 60 doctors attended the meeting featuring Dr George Detar nowski of Chicago a former Red Cross base hospital commander. Dr Detar nowski spoke on the treatment of backache and wartime experiences. Other talks covered pediatric problems and abdominal surgical drainage. Next meeting set for Wapello in October 1942. Women auxiliary entertained at the matinee and tea. Local committees included General Dr K E Wickham E E Stutsman and W E Anderson and Banquet Dr H F Masson and W F B Alcorn.
Plans were laid at the interchurch council meeting for the next union young people services and a Halloween party. The Sunday evening service is scheduled for 6:15 at the Baptist church one week from the coming Sunday with a special speaker and features. The Halloween masquerade is set for the early part of the last week of October.
Dr. Ben Walker from Corydon attended a medical meeting here yesterday and then visited last night with his daughter Mrs Kenneth Carris. Also visiting was Marcis Hogue of Corydon who traveled with Walker and called on Dr A W Clow at his home. Hogue is a nephew of Mrs Clow.

Rogers reports from Paso Tex that modern prohibition battles show bootlegging interests now allied with the WCTUs, gaining in candy soft drinks and ice cream profits. Candy sales jump from 150 million to 400 million, soft drinks from 50 to 275 million, ice cream from 55 to 308 million, leaving the wets with only thirst.
Judge D W Hamilton dismissed the Highland township appeal from farm land valuations set by the county board of supervisors. The ruling found no evidence of inequality or comparable valuations between townships. Costs were assessed against the appellants, and court adjourned until Monday for sentencing of Harold B Nicola for larceny.

In St Louis Hallahan silenced Philadelphia as the Cardinals beat the Athletics 2 to 0 to even the 1981 World Series. A freak ninth inning and strong pitching defined the game with Wilson driving in both runs for St Louis while Philadelphia stranded ten.
Washington Knights of Columbus plan a social observance on Monday October 12 at 7 30 pm. James Devaney of Cascade will deliver the principal address with speaking and music. A pot luck supper will be served for members and their families.
