The senate judiciary committee will open a broad inquiry into lobbyists including the social lobby. Norris announces a meeting to plan the investigation aimed at uncovering lobbying practices tied to tariff legislation and political influence across many groups.
The front of Phillips and Hebner’s drug store buzzes with demand as “Corporal Eugen” hits Thursday and Friday evenings. Seats are selling fast though some remain, with the home talent show praised as one of the best ever staged in the city. It features a sensational comedy about rookie life.
Rev Mr and Mrs A W Henke and children Dale and Marjorie expected this afternoon from Oelwein Iowa Rev Mr Henke will be the new Methodist minister to succeed Dr W W Bowers who leaves tomorrow for Waterloo to become pastor of the First Methodist Church
Dr. O W McGrew a Columbus Junction physician aged 56 died at home Tuesday after a paralysis attack. Born July 10 1873 in Jefferson County Ohio he came here in 1894 and was married in 1895 to Hattie Klotz. Surviving are his wife two children a daughter and a granddaughter, with funeral plans pending. Burial in Columbus City cemetery.
Fred Neiswanger Will Harwood and Frank Miller were elected directors of the Washington Country Club for a three year term. The nine member board will reorganize soon. The treasurer reports 1600 in treasury with debt cleared and a strong financial footing. The club has 125 members and is improving the golf course and grounds with landscaping planned near the clubhouse.
The Senate voted to strike out flexible tariff provisions in the pending bill and replace them with a clause creating a tariff commission to oversee rates and adjustments. The move shifts authority to a new commission as part of the ongoing tariff debate.
Iowa crops observer Charles D Reed reports week warm with normal sunshine and rain, 80 percent of corn past danger, fall plowing and winter wheat seeding advancing, sugar beets smaller than usual, potatoes digging begun, and clover seed yields higher than earlier estimates with new seedings progressing.
At the American Legion convention in Louisville the group chose Boston Mass as the site for the 1930 convention. Speakers honored fallen members and discussed veteran welfare with Gen. Charles P. Summerall affirming the Legion's strength of nearly one million members.
Mrs. Walter S. Brown returns tonight from Huntsville Ohio where she had been summoned by the death of her mother Mrs. W. W. Chaffee.

Washington county Red Cross executive committee met at Dr F W Eastwood's office to map the thirteenth annual roll call starting November 11. A dinner at the Y M C A on October 18 will include county branch representatives and roll call workers. Eastwood will report on his Washington DC trip and the national program.
Rnnby the Cincinnati zoo rhinoceros, the only one in 40 years, has died. Valued at $20,000 she was a major attraction especially to children who named her in a contest.
Washington reports the Federal Farm Board will bring all wheat storage facilities under farmer control. Senator Brookhart questioned price fixing while Samuel R. McKelvie insisted the act is for orderly marketing not surplus control. McKelvie signaled rapid organization for next year’s marketing and storage needs.
Barnes City Farmers Savings bank, founded in 1911, remained closed awaiting state banking department officials. The bank had operated yesterday and no cause for failure was known at the time of closing.
Henry C Welch a former Rock Island trainman and early Washington fire chief died suddenly at 11 55 pm at his daughter Mrs Frank Daily’s home 807 East Third street. Born October 24 1844 in Virginia he came to Iowa 65 years ago served in rail service and city street work. Funeral Thursday 2 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Rev A W Henke officiating. burial in Woodland Cemetery.
Iowa state highway commission awarded contracts totaling 555 285 49 for paving graveling and grading primary roads. Paving in Boone Story and Scott counties amounts to 324 600 61 with Scott county paving at 2 619 50. Graveling contracts cover Appanoose Delaware Harrison Jefferson Union Warren and Woodbury counties at 80 223 626. Grading in Fayette Jasper Marion and Union counties totals 106 372 26. Culvert and bridge work in Clayton Hardin Jackson Madison and Marion counties totals 44 088.
Doctors and nurses gathered at the nurses home for a practical lecture on chest diseases by Dr. John H. Peck of Des Moines. The talk used X ray slides to illustrate tuberculosis risks, home precautions, and age susceptibility with a follow up discussion led by Dr. Fry.
Governor Gardner ordered two National Guard companies to Marion N C to curb violence at the textile plant. A gun battle between union and non union workers and deputies killed two and wounded fourteen, as strikers fought to prevent day shift workers from entering.
The county board of supervisors appoint Fred Sweet, current deputy sheriff, to succeed Sheriff Charles M. Denison. The unanimous vote makes Sweet sheriff starting November 1 to fill the vacancy until the November 1930 election. Sweet has led the county jail as deputy and previously served as Brighton town marshal, following his father former sheriff M. F. Sweet.
The public is invited to attend a Girl Reserves service following an assembly at the high school. Mrs. Carl Seliger explained the group’s meaning while Barbara Cuddy outlined the year’s plans and Cherrie McElhin ey discussed membership campaigns. Verna Palmer led devotions and Mrs Henry Hull offered prayer.
