Young organist to play here Tuesday

Richard Smith, a 19 year old organist with theater church and hotel engagements, is featured in a free concert at Washington Community High School auditorium Tuesday evening October 5 at 8 15 p m. Washington County organizations and churches are urged to send representatives to a county wide meeting at the courthouse to discuss the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. YMCA bids open for building modernization plans

Robert Reed announces bids for YMCA Building modernization will be opened at a public meeting on Tuesday October 5 in the East Room. Building committee and Board of Directors will be present. plans mirror May capital fund proposal with minor material changes for long term maintenance. Construction to begin later in October with services moved to Lincoln School and Ben Franklin Store location. The swimming program scope will depend on contractor selection.

Hering Named Memorial Gifts Chairman for Iowa Heart

Juanita Hering of Washington state Bank Washington Iowa has been named Memorial Gifts Chairman for the Iowa Heart Association in Washington. She says memorial contributions help fund research for heart disease and that donors receive an acknowledgment receipt. Memorial gifts go to Miss Hering at the Washington State Bank. Saturday features the YMCA Buddy Day with boys bringing non members to participate in gym or swim and attend a 60 cent dinner. buddies admitted free. Deadline to sign up for lunch is 10:30 a.m.

Politicians Testify On Reapportionment Hearing In Des Moines

A Polk County District Court hearing heard that subdistricting could aid both voters and politicians. Lt. Gov. Robert Fulton backed very loose multi member district subdistricting while Sen. David Stanley argued one member districts ease voter and candidate burdens. Fulton urged keeping guidelines in loose terms and preferred not to place subdistricting in the Iowa Constitution. Kiwanis Adventure Series Opens With Ocean Depths Film

The fifth annual Travel and Adventure series sponsored by the Kiwanis club in Washington opens Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The first program features Owen Lee's film Exploring Inner Space about ocean depths, shot by a photographer who was part of Jacques Cousteau's French diving team. Season tickets for six programs are $5 and available at the door before Monday's start.
