Iowa Governor Herschel Loveless asks 158 legislators for reactions to nine potential revenue sources to break the tax deadlock. He aims to avoid a costly special session unless capital improvements and needed revenues can be enacted.
Miami Beach UP Beck urged a credentials review for delegates from 68 locals questioned by Senate investigators. He said the move could trim Hoffa's lead in the race for Teamsters president as the convention opened with changes to the union constitution underway. Haggerty, Hickey, and Lee argued only properly elected delegates should be seated for a fair ballot.
Detectives investigated an apparent inside job in the theft of $1850 from a locked theater safe. The theater manager found the loss Monday morning and said money was taken from two sacks in the safe. No forced entry was detected. the thief likely knew the safe combination and had building access.
Joe Wolf won the $25 prize for the best corn stand in Washington’s Avenue of Corn project to publicize the state mechanical corn picking contest. Dave Benson won $15 and Glen Mace $10. Numerous honorable mentions followed as Harold Jarvis praised public support and tourism interest generated by the effort.
The Washington County ASC office in Iowa was named the state's outstanding ASC office and will compete in an eight state area. The selection cited top evaluations, balanced program activity, and strong public service across ASC programs.
Frank Leeper 76 longtime Washington County resident died at 6 45 p m Monday September 30 1957 at his home 802 South Avenue D of a heart attack. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Thursday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Charles Hawkis officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born May 20 1881 in Washington County to Alexander and Amanda Hesseltine Leeper. He married Mary Pearl Anne February 28 1905 and spent most of his life in the county except for years in Missouri. He retired from the farm in 1948 and lived in Washington thereafter. He was a member of Prairie Flower Baptist Church. Survivors include wife four children Mrs W D Roberts Ainsworth Lester Leeper Washington Mrs Frances Kinnimont Los Angeles Calif Mrs Stanley Mouser Wellman seven grandchildren four great grandchildren and a brother John Leeper Washington.
A youth's prank call sent the Washington fire department to 310 South 9th, a non existent address, shortly before noon. Fire Chief M. L. Brown cautioned that such pranks are serious offenses with stiff penalties and noted this is the second incident at the station.
A fire at the State Cafe on 111 East Washington Street caused heavy damage from gas stove ignition. The blaze began about 5 am, with flames triggering window cracks and forcing entry through the back door. damage is estimated around $2,000 to over $4,000, with insurance adjuster due Wednesday and the cafe closing for now.
Washington County attended the First District Young Republican meeting at The Epicurean Monday. Congressman Fred Schwengel spoke on his duties and past year legislation. He discussed issues from Washington and invited constituents to stay in touch by mail.
Amos Yoder 63 was found dead on his Wellman farm from hanging after a period of despondency. Funeral set for Oct 3 at Wellman Mennonite Church with ministers George Miller and Max Yoder. Burial in Wellman cemetery, Powell Funeral Home handling arrangements. Survived by wife Corra Zimmermann, Mattie Ann Troyer, two daughters, two brothers, three sisters, seven grandchildren. two sons and first wife predeceased.

National Guardsmen replaced 101st Airborne on daytime guards at Central High School in Little Rock marking the shift to full Arkansas National Guard control. About 100 paratroopers remained on site with nearly 1,000 others held in reserve near Little Rock and at Camp Robinson.
Victor Wayne Whitley 26 of Granger Texas surrendered near North Vernon Indiana after a running gun battle that left two state troopers dead and several officers wounded. The bandits had earlier killed Michigan trooper Dugald Pellot and wounded another, abducted hostages, and fled across state lines with large sums of cash.
War nie Moran 62 of Fredonia died at 5 p.m. Monday at Veterans Hospital Iowa City after a long illness. The body is at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction pending funeral arrangements. Moran born Sept 15 1895 in Lapham II son of Jacob and Josephine Moran married Ocie McFarland in Washington in 1917. He survived by wife mother 12 grandchildren two sons Lloyd Fredonia and William Ames five daughters Ruth Lamden Los Alamedos Marguerite Malle Pittsburg Kan Betty Oakes Columbus City Janet Couger Mediapolis Velma Moran Burlington and one brother Oscar Moran West Liberty.
Four southern governors met with President Eisenhower in Washington to present a plan aimed at easing federal troop involvement in Little Rock school integration. The group, led by North Carolina Governor Luther Hodges, refused to reveal specifics but expressed high hopes for a solution and hinted at possible broader talks on Southern race issues.
Earl L. Steward, 39, arrested in Philadelphia on charges of unlawful flight from Nevada to avoid prosecution for the murder of Thomas R. Jessen, 55, a North American Van Lines driver whose body was found near Wendover Nevada. Jessen had last been seen Sept. 9, with about $2,000 missing. Steward to be arraigned before U.S. Commissioner Henry Mr. Cory.
United Press Iowa reports generally fair and pleasant weather with above normal temperatures through Wednesday. Tonight's lows near 40s to 50s, Wednesday highs from 75 to 85, little change anticipated Thursday.
